Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7053 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 19 · Letter 22

By the grace of Hashem,

Chol HaMoed* Sukkos* 5720,

Brooklyn, New York,

To Mr. Yitzchak Damyel (note 1: See, regarding him, letters no. 6539, 7168, and 7403),

I greet you and bless you,

You have surely received my letter wishing you a good year, as well as the index of the Likkutei Torah* that was sent to you. You wrote to me that the members of your group had a discussion about my two letters (note 2: These are letters no. 6876 and 6898). You will therefore specify to me what resulted from it. You ask me to clarify certain points of my letters. The occupations inherent to this period make it difficult for me to concentrate on this idea. Furthermore, and this is essential, it would be easier for me to compose a complementary explanation or an extension of my two letters if I knew which points or concepts pose difficulty for you, do not seem logical to you, or are not clearly defined in my letters. In this way, I will endeavor to develop them. I enclose a copy of my letter addressed to everyone on the occasion of this Rosh Hashanah* (note 3: This is letter no. 7014). Its content is precisely connected to these two letters and especially to the second, based on the consciousness, in accordance with the saying of the Alter Rebbe* (note 4: See, on this subject, letters no. 4604, 7148, and 7441), that: "A Jew does not want and cannot separate himself from the Divinity." It is clear that this is so for each and every one of those who pose these questions. Thus, perhaps a supplementary explanation will prove superfluous if they are touched profoundly, as the Likkutei Torah* explains at the beginning of Parshas* Shemini*.

You have no doubt learned of what has been discussed here on several occasions — the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*. It is therefore appropriate to emphasize two essential points of his work and accomplishment, which seem contradictory:

A) He bound himself and united with the simplest Jews.

B) He brought to them and deeply infused within them — in accordance with the connection our Sages* make between Lifneihem*, "before them," and Lepnimiyusam*, "in their inner dimension" — the secrets of the Torah* and even the secrets of its secrets.

But in reality, these two points are but one, in accordance with a principle of Chassidus*, specified by various texts, according to which what is the highest — precisely the highest — descends the lowest. It follows that every concept of Chassidus* must receive a concrete application — not a small action, but indeed a great action. This is how one reveals that which can be qualified neither as high nor as low (note 5: The Divine Essence, transcending these notions) — the Essence, since such is the purpose of man. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this, as well as for a joyous festival, for yourself and for all the members of your family.

Due to the sanctity of the festival, the Rebbe Shlita* did not sign this letter, and I therefore do so in his name,

The secretary,
