Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7052 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 21
By the grace of Hashem,
20 Tishrei* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter, written following my wishes for the new year, which you have surely received:
A) You allude to the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*. The most important point to emphasize in this matter is the following (note 1: See, on this subject, letters no. 7114, 7226, 7328, 7333, 7356, and 7403). One must rectify the error of those who hold that the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* is summarized by the phrase: "Hashem desires the heart," and that it therefore goes against, Heaven forbid, the assertion of the Mishnah* that "the deed is essential." One therefore concludes... (note 2: That the practice of the mitzvos* is not essential). In this matter, it is important to emphasize that the Baal Shem Tov* did not introduce the slightest leniency of the Law (note 3: Literally: "for the point above the Yud*"), Heaven forbid, including for simple practices established by the Sages*. On the contrary, he showed the importance of fervor, emphasized that every Jew fully possesses the means to unite with his Creator through His Torah* and His mitzvos*, that this is not so only for those who received innate intellectual capacities enabling them to study the Torah* profoundly. He emphasized that all are obligated to practice the mitzvos* in a concrete manner, and that each person, "in accordance with his intellectual predispositions and the source of his soul," according to the expression of the Alter Rebbe*, must study the simple meaning, the allusive meaning, the analytical meaning, and the esoteric meaning of the Torah*.
B) You report proposals according to which the students of the schools would participate in various parades and demonstrations. In a general manner, I do not approve of such practices, for one must not interrupt the study of children, even for the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdash*, and how much more... (note 4: For such activities). An exception can be made to this principle when their participation receives a pedagogical value. Indeed, the teaching provided to students is not only verbal. It also involves concrete practice and such actions. Moreover, one can concretely verify that these are deeply in the mind of the student and that he retains them. It follows that before obtaining positive participation, an explanation by the teacher or instructor regarding its significance is necessary. You will also deduce from this all the precautions that are necessary in this matter. Indeed, the student can always receive an explanation about this participation from someone else — for example, from those you cite in your letter. And one can imagine that this second explanation would lead him to an opposite conclusion, as you yourself write. In case of doubt, it is therefore preferable to abstain. You argue that one cannot separate oneself from the community (note 5: That one must therefore allow the students to participate in these activities if the other schools do so). On the contrary, it is sometimes necessary to emphasize more clearly the importance of a certain worldview and, precisely for this reason, to separate oneself from the community, without being deceived by the fact that many adopt a contrary opinion.
C) You tell me that your son has not entirely freed himself from what happened to him, even though the situation is much better than in the past. The doctor has surely explained to you the essential, or at least decisive, importance of the nervous state. When this has improved, strengthened, when he has regained confidence in himself, he has begun to feel better. But to strengthen this achievement and to make what happened disappear, there are several treatments that doctors can prescribe — for example, reducing food intake and, of course, drinking before going to sleep.
D) You also speak to me about contraception (note 6: For a woman who fears pregnancy due to elevated blood pressure). Our Torah*, which shares the same etymology as Hora'ah*, teaching, is a Torah* of life — not only in the World to Come, but also, and even essentially, in this world, for "it is not found in the heavens." Now, blood pressure changes from one period to another. It depends on emotion and state of mind. Forgetting it largely reduces it. The doctor will therefore explain to them (note 7: Presumably to this woman and her husband) that thousands of women with blood pressure higher than normal nevertheless succeed in having children in the most favorable manner. The essential idea in this matter is as follows. Any human intervention in such domains, which depend solely on the Creator of the world Who directs it, goes against primary logic — and not only against the conception of the Torah*. One could add many other details on this subject, but I will give only two:
1. In our generation, each person is "a firebrand saved from the flames," after the persecutions that were endured — may Hashem grant that they never occur again. One must therefore complete what could not be accomplished by those who perished to sanctify the Name of Hashem. Above all, it is necessary to complete the number of Jews, in the most literal sense.
2. In our era, everyone seeks pretexts, builds general rules from specific situations, sometimes even in a curious manner, provided one can thereby simplify one's life. One can therefore fear that such an attitude will lead other women to do the same (note 8: To have recourse to contraception). Indeed, it is not known to all that the reason for such an attitude in this case is elevated blood pressure. Moreover, one does not even ask what the reason and explanation are. One cites as proof only the concrete action.
May Hashem therefore grant that you give me good tidings of all this, of your success in your sacred mission — education based on sacred values — and "to whoever adds (note 9: Efforts), it is added (note 10: Blessings)." With my blessing to give good tidings and for a joyous festival (note 11: Of Sukkos*, this letter being dated its sixth day, the fourth of Chol HaMoed*).
Due to the sanctity of the festival, the Rebbe Shlita* did not sign this letter, and I therefore do so in his name,
The secretary,
