Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7043 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 19 · Letter 12 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

By the grace of Hashem,

11 Tishrei* 5720,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of multiple

accomplishments, Rav E. L. (note 1: Rav Eliezer Lippa Lavi, of Yerushalayim*. See, regarding him, letters no. 6731 and 7358),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 5 Tishrei*, as well as your letter and greetings transmitted to me by a person from your city who came here. I thank you very much. May Hashem grant that each one of us, within all of Israel, merit to obtain what results from the Mitzvah* of the four species (note 2: Of Sukkos*. Rav Lavi indeed wrote: "I am sending to the Rebbe Shlita*, this day, by airmail, an Esrog* that I picked myself"). For this is a Mitzvah* of general scope, like all those of the month that itself has general scope and is sated with every good (note 3: The month of Tishrei*). But for the revelation to be obtained here below, the process must first begin in the heart of man. It is precisely for this reason that one brings the four species toward one's heart (note 4: During the blessing and the recitation of Hallel*). And it is regarding this that it is written: "He placed the world in their heart" — in that of man. In this way, blessing and success are obtained in abundance for the entire year, in all domains, material and spiritual alike. With my blessing for a joyous festival of the season of our rejoicing (note 5: The festival of Sukkos*), which approaches, and to give good tidings.

P.S.: You ask me about my letter (note 6: This is letter no. 6801), regarding your book entitled "Collection of Words on the Torah*" (note 7: Rav Lavi asked the Rebbe whether he could publish this letter). You know the teaching of the Tzemach Tzedek*, echoing the formulation of our Sages*: "We are the workers of the day," and we therefore reveal, in the world, the day, the light, as it is said: "And Hashem called the light: day." If you think that my letter can invite to the fear of Hashem, to the Torah* and the mitzvos*, it is quite clear that you may publish it in the second volume of your book. You refer to "speech" and "word" (note 8: In this collection, page 106, Parshas* Va'eira*, it states: "I cited the author of the work 'The Writing and the Tradition,' in the name of the holy Zohar*, of Rabbeinu Bachya*, and of the Gaon of Vilna*, according to whom 'speech' is revealed while 'word' is hidden. But meditating on the Likkutei Torah* of our master Rabbi Chaim Vital*, in Parshas* Ha'azinu*, I believed I found there the inverse assertion"). On this subject, the following distinctions should be made:

A) From the perspective of the one who pronounces them, the "word" can be silent, whereas "speech" is revealed, affirmed. You will consult the Zohar*, volume 3, page 132b, as well as the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, Parshas* Chukas*, page 57c.

B) From the perspective of the one who listens, the "word" is soft, light, whereas "speech" is harsh, according to tractate Makkos* 11a, and the Likkutei Torah* of the Arizal*, at the beginning of Parshas* Ha'azinu*, at the reference cited by your letter.

You also cite the Zohar*, volume 2, page 79b, and you will consult, in this regard, the Mechilta*, cited by Rashi's* commentary. The answer to the question you pose is given by the Or HaChamah*, at the same reference.
