By the grace of Hashem,

7 Tishrei* 5720,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter of the Fast of Gedaliah*, which will soon be transformed into joy and gladness. Obviously, I was particularly horrified by its content and even more by the composure with which you speak of your past than by the events themselves that you recount. Nevertheless, our Sages* say that "nothing withstands the will" and "if you make efforts, they will be crowned with success." It is therefore certain that you have the means to follow the royal path, that of the King of the world, in the fullest sense of the term. Indeed, this is even easier for someone who has spent some time in the army — two years, according to what you write. For many months, you were accustomed to submission, to obedience to an officer who is, like you, a man of flesh and blood, even though, from various points of view, you surpass this officer — in your feelings, in your intellect, or in both. Concretely, the maintenance of an army and the preservation of order within it depend on this submission. Now, if this is so toward men, how much more is it the case, with all due proportion, toward the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He. And there is no need to say more, so evident is this.

In these days (note 1: Between Rosh Hashanah* and Yom Kippur*), when the Luminary is near His emanation (note 2: See letter no. 7040), may Hashem grant that your path in life be clear to you. Indeed, you have inherited the hidden love that every Jew possesses. This sentiment is, moreover, strengthened by your ancestry. Henceforth, you will therefore have a true life, which will conform to the teachings of our Torah*, Torah* of life, and its mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them." With my blessing that you be definitively inscribed for a good year,

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מצום גדלי', יהפך בקרוב לששון ולשמחה, לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך, ומובן שנבהלתי לתוכנו ביותר וביותר, ועוד יותר מקור הרוח בכתיבתו אודות העבר עליו, מאשר ע"ד המאורעות עצמן,

ואלא, כיון שאמרו חז"ל שאין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון, ויגעת ומצאת, בודאי שבידו ללכת בדרך המלך מלכו של עולם במלא מובן המלה, ואדרבה בנקל יותר להנמצא במסגרת צבאי משך זמן כשנתים כמו שכותב, ז.א. שבמשך הרבה חדשים הורגל בהנהגה דקבלת עול ולשמוע בקול מפקד בן אדם בו"ד כמותו, אף שלעתים קרובות בכמה פרטים, עולה הוא על המפקד, במדות או בשכל או גם בשניהם יחד, אלא שזהו קיום הצבא ושמירת המשטר דוקא ע"י קבלת עול, ואם בהנוגע לבו"ד הדברים אמורים, עאכו"כ להבדיל הבדלות אין קץ, למלך ממה"מ הקב"ה, ואין להאריך בדבר הפשוט,

ויהי רצון שימים אלו של קירוב המאור אל הניצוץ יאירו לפניו דרכו בחיים, את אשר ישנו בו בירושה באהבה מסותרת שבכאו"א מישראל, ועוד נתחזקה ע"י גזע צור מחצבתו וכו' וכו', ומכאן ולהבא יהיו חייו חיים אמיתיים מתאימים להוראות תורתנו תורת חיים ומצותי', עליהם נאמר וחי בהם.
