Volume 19 · Letter 9

By the grace of Hashem,

6 Tishrei* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter from the eve of Rosh Hashanah*, with the request for blessing that was enclosed, and which was read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. Of course, I was horrified by what you write to me coldly, regarding your duties and your work (note 1: On Israeli ships that travel during Shabbos*. See, on this subject, letters no. 6618 and 7094). And you conclude by saying that you are aware of my fierce opposition in this matter, as if it were a personal position, whereas I am merely reporting what I have learned from the books, and I have clearly explained my view on the subject. It is therefore not an unreasoned decree on my part, Heaven forbid, nor an opposition to anyone, but rather the necessity of preserving every individual and the entire community from a transgression that is committed publicly, in the name of all Israel, the like of which has not been known for millennia. Of course, these days (note 2: Between Rosh Hashanah* and Yom Kippur*) do not at all allow writing at length on this subject. However, I felt that I did not have the right to pass over all this in silence, especially during this period in which the Holy One, blessed be He, asks, implores: "Seek Hashem when He may be found, call upon Him when He is near." In the words of our masters, the masters of Chassidus*, "the Luminary is near His emanation" during these days. And you know the explanation of Kabbalah* and Chassidus*, according to which Shabbos* is the anagram of Tashuv*, "attain Teshuvah*," which is, in this case, the Supernal Teshuvah*, its preparation and the stage preceding it being the lower Teshuvah* — that is, deep regret for what has occurred and a firm resolution for the future. As I said, this period does not allow me to deal at length with all this.

May Hashem grant that the proximity of the Luminary inflame His emanations, in every place, in kindness and in mercy. Thus, immediately, the people of Israel will observe Shabbos* in the proper manner, and the Jews will immediately be redeemed from their inner exile as well as from exile in the simple sense — that which is the fulfillment of the verse: "And I, hiding, I shall hide" (note 3: The repetition here alludes to a particularly opaque concealment, to the point of not even being aware of its existence). Indeed, the twilight is so intense and deep that the concealment itself is hidden (note 4: So that one cannot identify it and can therefore mistake it for light). It is therefore affirmed that this is indeed the path that must be followed, the proper one — moreover, it is done in public, as I said, and one speaks in the name of the entire people of Israel. May Hashem grant that you be able to give me good tidings of all this. Now, there is no good other than the path of the Torah*, of which it is said: "I have given you a good acquisition." Moreover, this was given on a Shabbos*, and even before that (note 5: Before the revelation at Sinai), it was already necessary to observe this day. Indeed, this observance was enacted at Marah*. Despite this, it was received with love, as the early Sages and Decisors explain. I hope that these few lines will have their effect, and that in the future, you will earn your livelihood and that of the members of your family in accordance with the Torah*, in a kosher* and respectable manner. With my blessing that you be definitively inscribed for a good year,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
