Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7036 — Prayer
Volume 19 · Letter 5
By the grace of Hashem,
5 Tishrei* 5720,
Brooklyn,
I bless you and greet you (note 1: This letter is addressed to a young girl),
I am responding to your letter of 28 Elul*, in which you briefly describe what you have experienced. You tell me that you have adopted the Chabad* rite for prayer and you inform me of the difficulties that result from this. I have already responded, on this same subject, to the letter of your friend (note 2: This is the previous letter), and she will surely show you what I wrote to her. I will emphasize here only one point, which I also mentioned in that letter and which is particularly fundamental. It is the following. Our Torah*, Torah* of life, has asked us to follow pleasant and peaceful ways. Each man and each woman must distance themselves to the utmost from dispute, which Heaven forbid. If one truly desires to spread the awareness of Chabad*, the best way is, on the contrary, to set a good example of the behavior one should adopt, toward Hashem and toward people, so that all who see it will praise it, emphasizing the elevation of this movement and the behavior of those who adhere to it.
You tell me that insofar as you pray according to the Chabad* rite, you sometimes have to stand when your class is seated. I do not understand this statement, for the difference between the Chabad* rite and the others pertains solely to the text of the prayer, but not to the matter of standing or sitting. It is certain that you can say the Shemoneh Esrei* (note 3: When it is appropriate to stand) when the entire class does so as well. Indeed, it is not wise for you to distinguish yourself, which contradicts the established order and the necessary obedience. You must therefore endeavor that all pray at the same time, as I said. May Hashem grant that you and your friends, within your class, conduct yourselves in a manner befitting Jewish girls, each of them being defined as a descendant of Sarah*, Rivkah*, Rochel*, and Leah*. You will thus experience success in all that concerns you. With my blessing that you be definitively inscribed for a good year,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
the secretary,
