Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7035 — Chinuch

Volume 19 · Letter 4

By the grace of Hashem,

4 Tishrei* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I bless you and greet you,

I am responding to your letter of 26 Elul*, in which you raise several questions, for which you will find brief answers below (note 1: See also the following letter):

A) In a general manner, the behavior of a Jewish man or woman must follow pleasant and peaceful ways. Such is the path of the Torah*, which shares the same etymology as Hora'ah*, meaning teaching, as it is said: "Its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace" (note 2: The recipient of this letter is apparently a young girl who adopted the customs of the Chassidim*, which gave rise to some relational problems).

B) It is quite evident that a student must listen to the teachers, as various texts establish, in particular the Shulchan Aruch*, in the laws of the respect due to a teacher (note 3: These problems also affected the relations of this young girl with her teachers).

C) What you write regarding the Arizal* rite is wise (note 4: Apparently the decision to adopt it). The one who established it (note 5: The Alter Rebbe*) chose it from among various rites, so that it would be suited for all, as the Likkutei Amarim* of the Maggid of Mezeritch* explains at length — he who is the master of the author of the Sefer HaHafla'ah* and of the author of the Sefer HaMiknah*, both scholars of worldwide stature, whose books are studied in all Yeshivos*.

D) One who prays individually in a synagogue of a different rite has the right to maintain his own. There is, in this matter, absolutely no risk (note 6: Of forming several groups within a single synagogue, which would be forbidden), provided, of course, that this individual is not the prayer leader. But as I said above, this must take place in a pleasant manner and without insistence.

E) Based on what was said in paragraph C, it is clear that one can pass (note 7: See, on this subject, letter no. 7032) from the Ashkenazi* rite to the Sephardi* rite and from the latter to the Arizal* rite, which is the Chabad* rite, but not the reverse. It would therefore be good to maintain this rite, since, according to what you write, you have already adopted it and continue to do so. You will do so, without a doubt, in a pleasant and peaceful manner. Thus, you will obtain the full agreement of your teacher.

I hope that your behavior conforms in every respect to that of Jewish girls, each of them being defined as a descendant of Sarah*, Rivkah*, Rochel*, and Leah*. Now (note 8: Between Rosh Hashanah* and Yom Kippur*) is the time to take good resolutions, in order to achieve an addition in this matter. Indeed, one observes a particular motivation during the Ten Days of Teshuvah*, as it is said: "Seek Hashem while He may be found, call upon Him when He is near." At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of each of them. With my blessing to be definitively inscribed for a good year,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,

P.S.: To complete what was said above, I will add that the fact that there is nothing objectionable about praying according to your rite, even if the community has a different one, is established by various texts, in particular the Piskei Dinim* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, section Orach Chaim*, chapter 236. And it is known that such was the behavior of the author of the HaHafla'ah* and that of his master (note 9: The Maggid of Mezeritch*). Likewise, the permission to pass from the Ashkenazi* rite to the Sephardi* rite and from the latter to the Arizal* rite, which is that of Chabad*, but not the reverse, is stated by the responsa Minchas Elazar*, volume 1, chapter 1, and by the Kuntres Shiyurei Minchah LeShem*, which cites several works dealing with this question.
