Volume 19 · Letter 2

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Tishrei* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter of 28/9, and at a propitious moment, I will mention your name, as well as that of your wife, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. It is, of course, necessary to intensify your commitment to the Torah* and the mitzvos*, in accordance with the injunction that "one ascends in the domain of holiness." These are the channel and the vessel enabling one to receive the blessings of Hashem in all one's needs, especially when one finds oneself in a place where, for whatever reason, those who observe the Torah* and the mitzvos* are few. It is then beyond doubt that every Jew present must set an example of what it means to be a descendant of Avraham*, Yitzchak*, and Yaakov*, including for the non-Jews. Indeed, every specific behavior adopted by a Jew must constitute a sanctification of the Name of Hashem. Even if the difficulties in such places are quite evident, Hashem gives the assurance that He will grant His help to each person. Furthermore, our Sages* have informed us that: "when a man sanctifies himself a little here below, he is sanctified greatly from above."

For various reasons, I do not wish to say more on this point, all the more so since, for someone like you, any explanation is unnecessary. I will therefore content myself with reiterating the essential idea that each person, in every place, must put into practice the Torah* and the mitzvos*. And "the result is commensurate with the effort," for the assurance has been given to us that one can guard and fulfill (note 1: These two terms corresponding to the prohibitions and the positive commandments) the Torah* and the mitzvos*. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of all this. With my blessing that you be definitively inscribed for a good year.

P.S.: Regarding what you write to me about the redemption (note 2: Of the Tzedakah* given for the redemption of one's soul on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah* and Yom Kippur*), you will distribute this money among Tzedakah* causes linked to an education based on sacred values, or schools in your country that apply these values. I enclose a copy of my letter addressed to everyone on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah* (note 3: This is letter no. 7014). No doubt you will disseminate it in the appropriate manner.
