Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7032 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 19 · Letter 1 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Tishrei* 5720,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and is

devoted to communal needs, Rav Shalom (note 1: Rav S. Rivkin, of Seattle. See, regarding him, letters no. 6017, 7324, and 7442),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Elul* and what was enclosed. You ask me what position you should adopt regarding the practices for which a divergence exists between the practices of the Arizal* and the customs of the synagogue in which you pray. It is quite evident that personally, you have no reason to change your manner of acting. Indeed, there is, in this case, no formation of groups (note 2: Within a single synagogue, which would be forbidden. This is the reason why those who put on Tefillin* on Chol HaMoed* cannot do so if they are in a synagogue where this is not done. There would then be two groups — those who pray with Tefillin* and those who do not. On the other hand, the existence, within a single community, of several prayer rites is not considered a formation of groups), according to the halachic* principle established by the Tzemach Tzedek* on Orach Chaim*, at the end of chapter 236. However, as various texts establish (note 3: See, on this subject, letters no. 6704, 7035, 7036, 7039, and 7107), one can pass from the Ashkenazi* rite to the Sephardi* rite and from the latter to that of the Arizal*, which is the Chabad* rite, but not the reverse. One must therefore ensure that various customs are adopted, of course in a pleasant manner — for example the Hakafos*, which we are accustomed to celebrate three times (note 4: On the evening of Shemini Atzeres*, then on the evening and morning of Simchas Torah*, whereas according to other customs, they take place only the last two times). One must therefore explain that there is nothing dramatic about adopting these three celebrations, that one can, at most, announce that only those who wish will participate. Moreover, the Hakafos* take place after the prayer and will therefore not "disturb" the others.

I do not know what you did for the sounding of the Shofar*. I am surprised that you did not verify all this from the outset. It seems to me, indeed, that according to their custom, one does not reach the number of one hundred soundings (note 5: As is the case for the Chabad* custom). There too, you could have completed these soundings up to that number, using the same explanation (note 6: Specifying that this concerns only those who wish). In this way, you would have touched the others present, as the Likkutei Torah* explains at the beginning of Parshas* Shemini* (note 7: Recalling that "touch" means both "to contact" and "to sensitize"). This is self-evident. With my blessing to be definitively inscribed for a good year,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,

P.S.: You have surely received, some time ago already, my letter wishing you a good year.
