Volume 18 · Letter 532 · [5718-5719]

5718–5719,

You ask me what to do in the following cases:

A) Regarding the reading, twice, of each verse of the weekly Sidra* and the Targum*, you will consult the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 285, paragraph 6, which says: "Some have the custom... others have the custom..." (note 1: Some read them on Friday afternoon, others on Friday morning). The Sefer Klalei HaPoskim* cites three views on this subject and rules in accordance with what is reported by the Sdei Chemed*, Klalei HaPoskim*, chapters 13 and 14. By contrast, the Rebbe Rashab*, in his well-known teaching (note 2: See the Igros Kodesh* of the Rebbe Rashab*, volume 1, page 177) regarding the reading of the Torah*, follows those who adopt the second view (note 3: That is, Friday morning). Concretely, you will see the Hayom Yom*, on the date of 4 Teves* 5703. The idea of not completing this reading on the day it is begun also appears in the Magen Avraham*, chapter 285, paragraph 6. Of course, one must then begin once more until the conclusion, in order to conform to the more stringent view, according to which one must not interrupt until the end (note 4: That one must not speak during the entire reading).

B) When does one cut one's nails on the eve of Shabbos*? The Magen Avraham*, chapter 285, citing the Shnei Luchos HaBris*, says that one does so before reading the two verses and the Targum*. By contrast, for the Pri Eitz Chaim*, at the Gate of Shabbos*, chapter 3, one does so only after this reading. It seems clear, however, that one must do so before the ritual immersion, as the Sifsei Kohen*, Yoreh De'ah*, chapter 198, paragraph 25, specifies. The Arizal* says that one does so before midday and asks that one cut one's hair during the afternoon, so as not to transgress the prohibition: "Do not muzzle the ox while it plows." The same applies to the nails, since "they (note 5: The forces of evil) hold on to the hair and the nails." This is also what the Maggid Meisharim*, Mishlei*, reproduced in the Siddur* of Rabbi Shabtai of Rashkov (note 6: That of the Arizal*), says regarding cutting the nails of the hands and feet on the same day, although the Arizal* does not reject this practice, as the Shaarei Teshuvah* states in chapter 260. On the other hand, it is clearly stated in the Shaar HaKavanos*, at Gate 6: "My master, the Arizal*, cut his nails after the Minchah* prayer." In contrast, the formulation of the Mishnas Chassidim* shows that he does not share this view. But this point will not be developed here. In any case, I have not received a concrete instruction in this matter.
