Igrot Kodesh · Letter 703 — Faith & Bitachon

By the grace of Hashem,
3 Elul 5710,

May the mountains bring peace and blessing
to the great Rav, Chassid* who fears Hashem, who issues judgment,
vital and of many accomplishments, leading his community in uprightness,
who enlightens and illuminates, of favorable countenance, descended
from the Tzaddikim, Rabbi Meir Shlita Abuhatzeira, mashpia*
of the community of Midelt [1],

I hope you are well,

I heard with pleasure, through our representative, the great Rav, man of many accomplishments for all that concerns Torah and Mitzvos*, who devotes himself most faithfully to communal needs, who knows how to strengthen Torah and Yiddishkeit*, Rabbi Binyamin Gorodetzki [2], of yourself and of your actions to disseminate Torah and Yiddishkeit, in your community and around it, in the region where your influence is exerted.

In accordance with your request, which was transmitted to me by Rav Gorodetzki, I have mentioned your name and the names of the members of your family, that you should know all good, when I was at the gravesite of the Tzaddik*, our head, my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

Thus, you will be inscribed and sealed for a good year, so that the needs of each one of you, men and women, be satisfied. Without doubt, the Tzaddik will bless you. The Zohar, vol. 3, page 71b, says, indeed, that after having left this world, he is found there more than during his lifetime. And the Holy One, blessed be He, will fulfill in full the blessings, material and spiritual, of the Tzaddik.

You know [3] that chapter 27 of Iggeres HaKodesh, by the author of the Tanya, doubly consoles "those who are broken, suffering, and groaning," and you will also consult the Or HaTorah of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Parshas Shemos, page 64, which clarifies this last term. The Tzaddik "distributes vitality to all the living who are bound to him, in measure of this sincere attachment and the true and pure love one bears him."

The Sefer HaHishtatchus specifies that "those who did not know him during his lifetime, but have studied the books he bequeathed to us, who receive the clarity of his teaching and strengthen themselves, thanks to him, in their service of Hashem — these can without doubt be considered as his disciples. They have faith in this Tzaddik and benefit from the light of his Torah. For the leaves exist thanks to the roots."

My father-in-law, the Rebbe, explains, in a letter, that "the great desire to attach oneself to the master can be satisfied only when one studies the Chassidic discourses he delivers and writes. To see his face is not enough."

In a second letter, he specifies that "to one who asks how to attach himself to me, since I do not know him personally, I would say that it is possible to do so really through the study of Torah. The one who learns my Chassidic discourses, reads my sichos, binds himself to my friends, the Chassidim and the students of the Yeshivah, in their studies and in their gatherings, accedes to my request by reciting Tehillim [4] and observing the times of study — is in fact attached to me."

By studying the teachings and the sichos of the Rebbe, by following the straight path he traced for us, "as the face is reflected in the water," one spirit will arouse another, which will reveal itself fully. For, in this world of action, he is today even more present than during his lifetime, and continues to fulfill his mission there.

But one attaches oneself yet more clearly to him by taking part in his sacred work. I have good hope that you will lend us your support, to the full measure of the possible, as you said to our representative, the great Rav, Rabbi Binyamin Gorodetzki. Through you, the holy Name of Hashem will be magnified in the world, Amen, may it be so.

In a separate package, I have sent you a Tanya and some pamphlets of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. You will kindly confirm to me that you have received them.

I conclude by wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, to be in good health, to see your Torah develop. You will have the merit of leading your community, in calm, on the path that leads to the house of Hashem, in a peaceful manner and in abundance.

I await your good news, and there is no good but Torah and Mitzvos,

The great Rav and Chassid, Rabbi Binyamin Gorodetzki, reported to me that you possess several Kabbalah books, written by your father and your grandfather. These no doubt contain the luminary of our holy Torah, more precious than pearls.
