Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7027 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 528 · [Fin de 5719]
End of 5719,
You ask me (note 1: This letter is addressed to Rav Nosson Nota Zuber and written directly on his letter, which is dated 14 Elul* 5719) about chapter 3 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah* of the Alter Rebbe*, which says: "approximately three hours before sunrise" (note 2: This is the moment when the fast begins). Indeed, the early Chassidim* already posed this question (note 3: See, on this subject, the collection Yagdil Torah, published in New York, volume 71, from page 235 onward), and I have not received an explanation on this subject. The responsa Rashag*, volume 2, of Rav S. Greenfeld, published in Bordiyov in 5699 (note 4: 1939; this work was cited in the previous letter), chapter 34, page 75, specifies in this regard that in Latvia, this corresponds to the hour of dawn or half an hour before it. But you will excuse me for saying that your words are not satisfactory in this matter.
One can also explain the validity of the condition fixed in this regard (note 5: The condition of beginning the fast at that hour and having it nevertheless be considered a complete fast), according to what is said in Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, which is based on the Yerushalmi*. According to the version given there of this Baraisa*, in tractate Taanis*, chapter 1, paragraph 4, the author is Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel* and not Rabbi Elazar ben Rabbi Shimon, as the Bavli* states. Now, according to several Decisors, cited by the Yad Malachi*, the Halachah* is ruled according to Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel* against the view of Rebbi*. This is therefore permitted (note 6: To eat before the fast) until the crow of the rooster. This is not what the Shulchan Aruch* rules in chapter 564. A commentator, in tractate Tamid* 26a, speaks of the third of the night after midnight. According to the conclusion of the Alter Rebbe* in his Siddur*, the day is counted from sunrise. It is therefore indeed approximately three hours before this sunrise, as Iggeres HaTeshuvah* states.
The Zohar*, volume 2, page 195b, cited by the Halachah* in the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 47, specifies that the crow of the rooster is at midnight, according to the Mishnah* of tractate Yoma* 20a. This is why one must distinguish between once a year and three times, as page 21a states. But one can question the commentary of Rashi* on tractate Zevachim* 20a and the Tosafos* on tractate Sukkah* 21b. However, time does not permit me to develop all this.
