Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7024 — Halachic Rulings on Grace After Meals

Volume 18 · Letter 525 · [Jours de Seli’hot 5719]

Days of Selichos* 5719,

You indicate to me (note 1: This letter is addressed to Rav Yaakov Werdiger, author and editor of the Siddur* Tzlosa DeAvraham. See, regarding him, letter no. 6045) an apparent contradiction (note 2: Regarding the matter of responding Amen*, when one enters a place where several people are having their meal and one hears the one who invites the others to recite the Grace After Meals say: "Blessed is He to Whom belongs what we have eaten and by Whose goodness we live") in the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, between chapter 192, paragraph 2, and chapter 198, in a parenthetical remark at the end of paragraph 1. Chapter 192 says: "and not the one who invites to the blessing" (note 3: He himself does not respond Amen*), thus referring to the one previously cited, that is, to the one who hears the others. It results from this that:

A) One can thus understand the length of this passage. Indeed, according to your interpretation, it would have been necessary to specify: "He did not say... only the diners," whereas with this explanation, one understands that the diners should not respond Amen* for two reasons:

1. This concerns only the one who comes from the street, whereas the diners must concentrate on listening. And such a distinction does have practical implications. Indeed, if one of the diners finishes the blessing before the others, he does not respond Amen*.

2. The invitation to recite the Grace After Meals is addressed essentially to the diners. Consequently, the one who comes from the street and must respond (note 4: Amen*) has a choice (note 5: He can respond to the one who invites or to one of the diners). He must, in this case, respond to the diners and not to the one who invites to say the blessing.

B) The reference to the Levush* in chapter 192 indicates that it is the source of the halachic* ruling in chapter 198. It is advisable, however, to consult his book, but I do not have it. I enclose what I wrote to someone regarding the formulation of the Alter Rebbe*, Vaanachnu* (note 6: "And we shall praise Hashem from now and for eternity" — in the verses preceding the Grace After Meals). Indeed, I have seen what you write on this subject.
