Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7023 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 524 · [Jours de Seli’hot 5719]

Days of Selichos* 5719,

You ask me for the reference of the statement of the Torah Or*, page 32b, and of the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Behaaloscha*, page 29c, according to which Aharon* is indeed one of the seven shepherds, whereas his name is not mentioned in tractate Sukkah* 52b. The same statement also appears in other texts of the Torah Or*, which you will find in the index. The reference is as follows:

A) The end of the Zohar* Chadash and the Tikkunim*, page 104a, says: "The faithful shepherd rose to his feet and said: 'Holy shepherds! Avraham*, Yitzchak*, Yaakov*, Adam* the first man, Aharon*, David* and Shlomo*.'" This also explains that:

1. The Torah Or*, page 82a, cites Avraham* as the first shepherd, whereas according to tractate Sukkah*, it is Adam*, the first man.

2. The Torah Or*, page 33c, considers that Yitzchak* is also among the shepherds.

B) The Zohar*, volume 2, page 26b, says: "it is Aharon* and Moshe*," in the singular, "for one is integrated into the other." You will consult tractate Taanis* 80a. This is why, in this case, only one of them is mentioned, namely the one who has the essential role. This is self-evident.

In this matter, one could pose another question, which is essential. The Torah Or* and the Likkutei Torah* define the seven shepherds as "those who infuse Divinity into the congregation of Israel." Now, what is the role of Ches* and Mesushelach* (note 1: Who do not belong to the Jewish people and therefore cannot infuse Divinity into it) in this matter? Commenting on the verse Michah* 5:4 (note 2: "Then peace shall reign. If Ashur invades our land and seizes our palaces, we shall raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes among men"), the Tzemach Tzedek* offers two explanations of the term "we shall raise." The first applies it to Ashur* and the second to the children of Israel, according to the interpretation of the Targum*, which would result in the defeat of Ashur*.

This will allow us to understand what was said above. Tractate Sukkah* follows the first explanation, whereas the Zohar* Chadash opts for the second. If I could permit myself, I would say that one must verify the first editions of the Zohar* Chadash. Perhaps, instead of Adam* the first man, one should read Yosef*, as for the Ushpizin* of Sukkos* (note 3: The Zohar* says that one receives, each evening of the festival, one of these Tzaddikim* in one's Sukkah*. It enumerates the same names as the Zohar* Chadash and the Tikkunim*, replacing only Adam* the first man with Yosef*). One could, however, raise an objection from the Torah Or*, page 33d. The Sefer HaMitzvos* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, on the Mitzvah* of Chanukah*, reproduces this passage of tractate Sukkah* and defines these shepherds. However, among the seven, he cites only Avraham*, Yaakov*, and Moshe*. One could deepen this analysis, but we will not do so here.
