Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7022 — Teshuvah

Volume 18 · Letter 523 · [Jours de Seli’hot 5719] · To: grand Rav

Days of Selichos* 5719,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

of vast knowledge, Rav Meir (note 1: Rav M. Meiri, of London),

I have duly received your book, volume 1 of Chumash* Torah Meirah (note 2: Which illuminates, from the name of the author), and I thank you very much. As a mark of affection, I reproduce here some very brief notes, according to the time at my disposal, and our Sages* say that "peace reigns at the end" (note 3: Scholarly disagreements between the Sages do not damage their good relations):

At the beginning of the introduction: The commentary of the Baal Shem Tov* is cited, in particular, at the end of the Maor Einayim*.

At the beginning of the additions, page 9a-b: A quick reading of the Midrash* HaNe'elam, in the Zohar* Chadash, at the beginning of Parshas* Bereishis*, establishes that, according to the view that says "the world was created with ten Utterances," the question is whether the world could have been created with a single utterance or even with an Aleph*. The formulation of the Mishnah* and of various texts of our Sages* shows that there is no controversy in this matter, and that it is in fact a question of different stages of the revelation of creation. On this subject, you will consult, in particular, the Avodas HaKodesh*, volume 4, chapter 4. To complete the subject and for the additions, it would have been good to also cite the statement of our Sages* formulated in the Yerushalmi*, tractate Chagigah*, chapter 2, paragraph 2, according to which the world was created with a Beis*, and the Zohar*, volume 2, page 20a, which says that the world was created with a thought.

At the beginning of the Rashi* references, page 9a: The reference to chapter 12 of Midrash* Bereishis Rabbah* is not exact. The Torah Shelemah*, in paragraph 219, says: "the study of the Torah* is mentioned in Midrash* Yelamdenu*," but I do not have this work.

At the end of the additions, page 342b: The Nun* of Charan* is inverted. The commentaries on this are the Aleph*, the Dalet*, and the Vav*. The others deal with "in Charan*." You will see, in particular, Midrash* Bereishis Rabbah*, chapter 68, paragraph 13, which says: "in Charan*: the place of His anger."
