Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7021 — Halachic Rulings & Modesty

Volume 18 · Letter 522 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

Days of Selichos* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

devoted to communal needs, of vast knowledge,

Rav Shlomo (note 1: Rav S. Goren, of Tel Aviv. See, regarding him, letter no. 6502),

For a certain reason, the sending (note 2: Of the present letter, in response to Rav Goren's letter) was delayed and, in the meantime, we met. You ask me about tractate Bechoros* 41a, according to the explanation of Rabbeinu Gershom* Maor HaGolah, according to which Cheres*, clay, means here Charutz*, gold, the Samech* and the Tzaddik* being two interchangeable letters. It results from this that:

A) One can understand the view of the Gemara* according to which: "the jug is clay," whereas one does not understand what clay, in itself, has more than this jug.

B) The presence of a lesion proves that such an inversion is possible (note 3: That it can sink into the flesh instead of being raised). Indeed, all lesions must be deeper than the shadow, even though, as a sign of their impurity, it suffices that they have the appearance of depth, even if this does not correspond to reality. You will consult, on this subject, the Torah Temimah* on the verse Tazria* 13:3 (note 4: "The Kohen* shall see the lesion in the skin of the flesh, and the hair in the lesion has turned white, and the appearance of the lesion is deeper than the skin of his flesh — it is a lesion of tzaraas*. The Kohen* shall see him and declare him impure").

Despite your hesitations during our discussion, I hope that you will proclaim, in the places where it is necessary, that: "the honor..." (note 5: "Of the daughter of the King is within" — the necessity of feminine modesty), for this is a principle from which one cannot abstract. Indeed, even regarding a material gain, and solely for a single person, it is said: "I will bless those who bless you." And Rashi*, commenting on tractate Megillah* 27b, specifies: "Rav heard... because Rav Huna had not spoken of what was merely an eventuality," whereas this was by no means his role (note 6: Despite this, since this word could have a concrete contribution, he should have pronounced it). How much more so is this the case... (note 7: For the recipient of this letter who, if he publicly demands the respect of this modesty, is assured of obtaining a certain result).
