Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7020 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 521
By the grace of Hashem,
Days of Selichos* 5719,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of Mr. Eliezer Aryeh HaLevi,
who is called Dr. Finkelstein (note 1: See, regarding him, letter no. 6529),
I greet you and bless you,
On the occasion of the new year, which arrives, for us and for all Israel, for good and for blessing, I extend my wishes to you and to all your family, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually. And I seize this opportunity to return to the content of your previous letter, in which you define the value of the Torah* by the positive influence it exerts — the only one capable of modifying the nature of man (note 2: The recipient of this letter deduced from this the necessity of promoting study alone, without emphasizing the importance of concrete action). Indeed, no one disputes that "the study of the Torah* surpasses all the precepts" and "great is study that leads to action." There is no need to explain this at length or to develop this idea. However, there is indeed a difficulty here. In our era, particularly in the United States, men are more pragmatic than intellectual. In this country, those who engage in profound intellectual activity are particularly few.
Of course, my purpose is not to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of such a situation. This is not the place to do so, and my objective is solely to describe the reality. From a pedagogical point of view, one therefore cannot rely solely on the study of the Torah*, telling oneself that those who practice it will draw the consequences, that the luminary of the Torah* will bring them back to the good. All of this, according to human nature, requires a thorough analysis and much time. The enthusiasm and the pursuit of an objective that demands a great investment of time go dissipating, and as that time passes, every opportunity that presents itself is lost. From this perspective, in our country here, more than anywhere else, the concrete situation requires that the study of the Torah* be accompanied by encouragement, a specific invitation to adopt behavior that is in accord with this study. I have already explained at length elsewhere that those who possess influence in the pedagogical domain have the duty to know the nature of the young people upon whom they exert it, to place more resolute trust in their deep strengths, not to fear, if they influence them fully, that they will not accept it. In reality, these young people can receive much more than one imagines. This is also the idea of the letter I addressed to everyone on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah*, which is approaching, and of which I enclose a copy (note 3: This is letter no. 7014).
Indeed, one can see in this the very foundation of our faith, the faith in the Tradition of Israel. Our Torah* says that "the Tzaddikim* are in the image of their Creator," and another text adds: "Just as the Holy One, blessed be He, creates worlds, Yaakov* does the same." How much more can one create a Jewish soul, which is itself an entire world. And one can make of it a new creature, transforming it from one extreme to the other. Chassidus* emphasizes that the word Mitzvah* is of the same etymology as Tzavsa*, meaning connection. By putting it into practice, one fulfills the terms of the verse: "You are bound to Hashem your Elokim*." From this, it is quite clear that they "are in the image of their Creator." When one observes one's student, he may seem very limited, but when one succeeds in having him adapt his behavior to his study of the Torah* of Hashem, leading a life of effective practice of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, one reveals in him moral strengths that one did not suspect — the strengths of the divine soul, which is bound and attached to the Elokim* of life. In a pleasant manner, one could say that it would be good to adopt such a conception even in the presence of the greatest doubt (note 4: As to the effectiveness this could have), for this is a situation of danger (note 5: And one must therefore do everything to save these young people). But in my view, there is no doubt here whatsoever. It is indeed an absolute certainty (note 6: Such an approach always proves effective). With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings,
