Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7019 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 520
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Elul* 5719,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of the luminous day of 18 Elul*, the date on which the two great luminaries were suspended — the date of the birth of our master, the Baal Shem Tov*, and of the Alter Rebbe*. You transmit to me the request of parents regarding their son. He has ceased to speak and, after some treatments that proved ineffective, he underwent a treatment on the bones of the neck, and it seems that he is better. These parents ask me whether they should continue this treatment.
Based on the few words you tell me about this treatment, it seems to be a method to which some doctors have recently had recourse, called chiropractic. It is by no means a practice having any forbidden quality, including according to those who defend it, and even according to its detractors. The controversy regarding it concerns solely its effectiveness. This answers the question of whether it is permitted to go to one who practices it. In any case, my purpose is not to rule on the Halachah*, all the more so since some details are not specified. They will therefore address a Rav* in their surroundings who rules on Halachah*, after having explained to him all the details of this treatment. On the question itself — is it good to go there once more? — it is indeed advisable to do so, since an improvement has already been observed.
If you indicate to me the name of the son and that of his mother, I will mention him at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, so that he obtains the satisfaction of his needs. Since you transmitted this request to me, may Hashem grant that you yourself give me good tidings on this subject. You will surely find the appropriate words to explain to the parents of this boy that they must strengthen their commitment to the Torah* and the mitzvos*. As good as their situation may be in this matter, an addition always remains possible, since one is attached to the Holy One, blessed be He, Who is infinite. This is how one multiplies the blessings of Hashem in all the needs of a man and his family. With my blessing that you give me good tidings, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
the secretary,
P.S.: You have surely already received my letter of blessing on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah*.
