Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7016 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 517 · To: participants à la réunion ‘hassidique du Melavé Malka

By the grace of Hashem,

27 Elul* 5719,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the participants in the Chassidic* farbrengen* of the Melaveh Malkah*,

meal of David the anointed king, and to the signatories of the general

request for blessing, may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you broadly and bless you,

At a propitious moment, your request for blessing will be read at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. At all times, our Sages* have shown the importance of the prayer that is pronounced near the tomb of the Tzaddikim*, but how much more is this the case in our era of revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah* and its dissemination, which brings to light the inner dimension of the world. Indeed, our Torah*, Torah* of life, establishes what constitutes the existence of the world, as our Sages* rule in the Yerushalmi*, tractate Kesubos*, chapter 1, paragraph 2, regarding the verse: "To Hashem, Who concludes for me" (note 1: According to which the existence of the world conforms itself to the ruling of the Torah*).

It has already been explained elsewhere that this does not contradict the assertion that, from generation to generation, the feelings diminish and the darkness intensifies. Indeed, tractate Sotah* 49a says: "There is no day..." (note 2: "Whose curse is not greater than that of the day before"). On the contrary, this is the explanation of such a situation. It is precisely when the darkness grows stronger that the heavenly assistance is increased. Indeed, the assurance has been given to us that: "The Holy One, blessed be He, comes to his aid and he can vanquish it" (note 3: The evil inclination). This subject, with all that flows from it, is particularly important in this period during which we say, twice daily, according to tractate Nedarim* 36a and the Shulchan Aruch*, at the corresponding reference: "Seek My Face. Hashem, I will seek Your Face" (note 4: Psalm* 27, which is recited twice daily from Rosh Chodesh* Elul* until Hoshana Rabbah*). One must then ask, seek the inner dimension, especially during the ten days that separate Rosh Hashanah* from Yom Kippur*. The spark is then close to the Luminary (note 5: The soul is close to the Divinity), as it is said: "Seek Hashem while He may be found... while He is near" (note 6: Our Sages* explain: "That is to say, during the ten days that separate Rosh Hashanah* from Yom Kippur*").

Furthermore, according to a well-known explanation of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah*, complementing what has just been stated: "This is true for one who is alone" (note 7: And who prays during these ten days. The result of the prayer of an individual during this period is the equivalent of that of a community during the rest of the year). Such a Teshuvah* emanates from the essence of the soul, Yechidah*, and it leads toward the Unique One of the world, Yachid* (note 8: Yechidah* and Yachid* should be connected to the one who prays alone, Yachid*). You have detailed, in the letter and the request for blessing, the positive wishes of your heart. May Hashem therefore grant that you also notify me when you are answered, with joy and enthusiasm. With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually,

M. Schneerson,
