Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7015 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 516
By the grace of Hashem,
27 Elul* 5719,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter from the eve of Shabbos*, in which you describe what you have experienced and tell me how you have organized your life at the present time. You conclude by enumerating various problems:
A) Sometimes, you feel that you are indifferent with regard to spirituality, to the point of struggling with your inclination. Now, you know the teaching of our Sages* according to which one who finds himself in such a situation must not be discouraged. Various texts explain this and, in this regard, you will also consult the holy Tanya*, in the passages indicated by the index found at the end of the book, in particular chapter 27.
B) How to repel unwanted thoughts? In a general manner, one can formulate the following advice in this matter. One must forget such a thought and not fight against it, for fighting has the effect of examining it attentively — that is to say, going against the very goal of forgetting. Nevertheless, a man thinks constantly, and forgetting therefore consists of concentrating on a thought belonging to an entirely different domain, if possible connected to the Torah* and the mitzvos*. For if a little light suffices to repel much darkness, how much more can much light do so.
C) In what manner can one begin to change one's behavior, and then do so in an orderly fashion? It is clear that in this matter, one cannot set forth immutable rules, for this depends on the character traits of each individual. Now, personalities differ. You will therefore seek the counsel of elder Chassidim* who are in your surroundings and who know you, or who will be able to answer these questions. They will guide you. Nevertheless, the general idea concerning such change is as follows. Advancement is made step by step, stage by stage, but not by a leap forward, which can only be exceptional, at certain moments. Of course, this applies only to barriers and resolutions in this matter. Indeed, what is forbidden is forbidden in any case, and one cannot allow oneself to wait for the day when one will finally understand that there is indeed a prohibition there. In that matter, it is not a leap forward that is necessary, but a total abandonment of the previous situation to accede to a new one. It is clear that the two are diametrically opposed. As the Tanya* explains, the transgression of even a minor ordinance of our Sages* is a prohibition in the full sense, linked to the forces of evil (note 1: Literally: "to the forces outside the domain of holiness"). And one who observes this minor ordinance thereby attaches himself and unites with the Light of Hashem. You will consult this text.
D) You ask me whether you should change your place of residence and, if so, where you should go. The decision in this matter depends on various points. Likewise, the opinion of your wife (note 2: See, on this subject, letters no. 5814 and 6147) is important on this subject, for the woman is defined as the mistress of the house. The merit of your spreading of Yiddishkeit* in your surroundings, as you describe to me and which you will surely intensify, because this is the necessity and the need of the moment, will protect you and multiply the blessings of Hashem for you and for all the members of your family. With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year, that you give me good tidings of all that has just been said,
