Igrot Kodesh · Letter 701 — Chinuch
Volume 3 · Letter 307
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Menachem Av 5710,
To my relative, the great Rav, distinguished Chassid*,
who fears Hashem, Rav Gershon [1],
Greetings and blessings,
I reply to your letter of Wednesday of Parshas Va'eschanan. I do not see why you apologize for writing to me. It is clear that I held nothing against you, and at any moment I am happy to receive news of the Chassidim*.
When the news is good, I take pleasure in it; and if it is the contrary, Heaven forbid, the simple fact of corresponding brings comfort and weakens the sense of solitude and discouragement.
Various texts establish that, when one cannot help materially, it is important at least to have a good thought, to express warm wishes in a friendly manner. And one knows how important it is to verbally express the qualities of the other and to minimize his faults. This has the consequence, immediately or in time, of bringing him elevation.
You will consult, on this subject, the commentary of the parable stated by Reb Hillel of Paritch [2], which appears in HaTamim, no. 2, and in the Igros Kodesh collection, vol. 1, page 20.
We know that the Baal Shem Tov endeavored to make simple people speak good words to one another. It is thus that he silenced the accuser.
I will read your request for blessing in the office of my father-in-law, where he grants his blessings and his interviews.
The Tzaddik blesses and the Holy One, blessed be He, fulfills his blessings in full, for he is found in this world more than during his lifetime.
You ask me about Likkutei Torah, Parshas Shelach, in the discourse on the libations, page 42b, which says: "The niddah and the zavah are purified by living water." You note that this contradicts the halachah, according to which living water is not necessary to purify these women. You point out that such an assertion is held, somewhere, by Rashi, but do not remember the exact reference.
You are likely alluding to Rashi's commentary on Tractate Shabbos 65b, and you will also consult Tosafos at the same reference. The assertion of Likkutei Torah is based on the Zohar, vol. 3, page 97b, which says: "And you shall count for yourselves: the verse specifies for yourselves, which can be compared to that other verse, she shall count seven days for herself. There too it is well said: for herself. Why this waiting? To purify herself in the water of this river that flows and returns, made of living water. And the woman's purification takes place at night."
Now, the verse "she shall count for herself" alludes to the niddah, and the Zohar speaks here indeed of living waters. What can one deduce from this in this case? The Ramaz explains the importance of living water and the level to which it corresponds. You will also consult Tikkunei Zohar, near the beginning of Tikkun 19.
I conclude by blessing you, greeting your entire community in general and all the members of your family in particular,
Menachem Schneerson
Notes:
[1] Rav Gershon Chen.
[2] Illustrating the saying that "what a gathering of Chassidim can accomplish, the angel Michael cannot obtain," he gives the image of a father who takes pleasure in the love and affection of his children.
