Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7008 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 509
By the grace of Hashem,
19 Elul* 5719,
Brooklyn, New York,
I bless you and greet you,
I have duly received your letter, which was undated, in which you speak to me about your morale (note 1: Which is not good at the idea of being in contact with unknown persons). It seems to me that I have already written many times that, in my opinion and based on what I have been able to observe in practice, every person, without the slightest exception, is by nature sociable, even if not all are so to the same degree. Therefore, when one endeavors to have conduct that goes against this nature, it is quite clear that one creates complications for oneself. And those who, for whatever reason, have difficulty relating to others have no other solution than to learn to swim, which one cannot do as long as one does not jump into the water, even if one is at the edge of the river. One must therefore jump into the water! This is how you will learn to swim and, in the end, you will succeed. And these long thoughts one may have at the river's edge — how to learn to swim, in what manner one must do it — all of this is of no use as long as one is not in the water!
You will excuse me for telling you that such is your situation. In your letter, you cite the pros and cons regarding an activity that involves the presence of many people. Now, you conduct this analysis while sitting in your room, within your four cubits. It is quite evident that my purpose is not to moralize, but rather to intervene once more in the hope of convincing you, this time, to plunge into an activity through which, against your will, at least during the first few days, you will be in contact with persons outside your family. I have good hope that in a short time, you will no longer need this compulsion and you will perceive the importance, the great benefit — including for others — of being in contact with different people. For it is not for nothing that man, by nature, was created with a sociable nature.
The words of our Sages* are wondrous and they convey a teaching concretely applicable to daily life. They say, in this matter, that every act belonging to the domain of holiness must be performed in the presence of ten people. Such an accomplishment is not merely public. It is furthermore performed in the most perfect manner. And you know the saying of Chassidus*, cited in the name of several of its masters, according to which it is more unpleasant to be alone in Gan Eden* than to be in the company of other Jews in the... (note 2: Gehinnom!). We are at the end of Elul*, the month of compassion, and that of the Holy One, blessed be He, is without limit. May Hashem therefore grant that you observe a clear positive development and you will give me good tidings of it. With my blessing to give these good tidings, to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
ז'ח
