18 Elul* 5719,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter of 13 Elul*, with the request for a blessing that was enclosed and that will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. You relate to me what has happened during these last months. Finally, you inform me of your decision, which has already been put into effect — to join the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*.

It is clear that your decision was very good and wise. You know what my view has been in this area, always and in the firmest manner. Every Jew must prepare himself before being confronted with the concerns of this world, by devoting his time solely to the study of our Torah*, the Torah* of life — to sacred studies that will be mixed with nothing else, not even with commercial activity. Of course, this is different from those who wish to devote themselves solely to study, who dedicate their entire lives to it, as the Rambam* says at the end of his Laws of Shemittah* and the Jubilee. Such preparation is the basis of the entire life that follows. Indeed, the stability of an edifice depends, above all, on the solidity of its foundations, as is the case in a material construction. In fact, there is no reason to improve the quality of the walls and the furniture if one is not certain that the foundations have sufficient solidity. The years one devotes, at the present time, to the study of the Torah* to the exclusion of all other activity count not only for the life of the World to Come. They are the proper preparation for life in this world. This is self-evident.

May Hashem grant that your decision in this matter be followed by action, with joy and enthusiasm. You will experience success in your study and in your practice of the mitzvos* during this time. This will increase your success throughout your life. This also means that a preparation of a few months is by no means sufficient. If it is not possible to devote several consecutive years, perhaps it is possible to do so in several stages, so that the final result is the same. And, "to whoever adds, it is added."

You allude to Tzedakah* money and you wish to make an anonymous donation. It would be good to transmit this sum to the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. It is possible to do so without specifying to whom the money belongs. With my blessing to give good tidings, to experience success in all this, to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מי"ג אלול עם הפ"נ המצורף אליו, שיקרא בעת רצון על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

בו כותב ר"פ מאשר עבר עליו במשך החדשים האחרונים והחלטתו אשר גם הביאה בפועל, להיות בתומכי תמימים ד...

ומובן אשר טוב במאד ונכון עשה, וידועה חוות דעתי מאז, ובהחלט, אשר על כל אחד ואחד מבני ישראל להכין עצמו (קודם) ליציאתו לעניני עולם, ע"י שיקדיש זמנו אך ורק ללימוד תורתנו הק' תורת חיים לימודי קדש מבלי לערב עם זה ענינים אחרים, ולא גם עניני עסק. מובן שהדברים אמורים בהנוגע לבעלי עסק וכיו"ב, משא"כ לאלו שרצונם להיות יושבי אהל, הרי כל חייהם מוקדשים הם להנ"ל, וכמו שהביא הרמב"ם בסוף הלכות שמיטה ויובל בזה. והכנה האמורה היא בדוגמת יסוד לכל חייהם בעתיד, שקיום כל הבנין שע"ג תלוי לראש ולראשונה בחוזק היסוד וכדוגמת בנין, שאין כל תועלת בשיפור הכתלים הרהיטים, כשאין מובטחים שהיסוד חזק כדי הצורך, שמזה מובן שהשנים שמקדישים אך ורק ללימוד התורה בהווה, אין זה בשביל חיי העולם הבא בלבד, אלא זוהי הכנה הנכונה להחיים בעולם הזה, וק"ל.

ויהי רצון שיקיים החלטתו אמורה זו, מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב ויצליח בלימודו ובקיום המצות משך זמן האמור, והרי זה יוסיף ג"כ בהצלחתו למשך כל ימי חייו.

מהנ"ל מובן ג"כ שהכנה חדשים ספורים בלבד, אין זה מספיק כלל, ואם אפילו לא אפשר כמה שנים רצופות, יש לסדר באופן שס"ה יהי' בכמות האמורה עכ"פ, וכל המוסיף מוסיפין לו.

במ"ש אודות ממון לצדקה, ורצונו לקיים בזה מתן בסתר, מהנכון שימסור זה לקופת תומכי תמימים ד... והרי זה יכולים למסור מבלי להודיע למי הכסף שייך.
