Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7004 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 505
By the grace of Hashem,
17 Elul* 5719,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 5 Elul*, in which you speak to me about your study program (note 1: For teaching a class within a school). I am somewhat surprised by it, for I had told you that this should focus on a tractate of the Gemara* that has a concrete impact, if possible a daily one. Thus will the question you pose to me be resolved. Now, in your letter, you mention an entirely different tractate. But there is reason to think that the explanation is the following: it is not you who choose what your study focuses on (note 2: This choice belongs to the school administration). However, you do not specify either that you made an intervention (note 3: With this administration) to this effect. Now, such an initiative must be supported for the same pedagogical reasons (note 4: The teacher will teach more effectively a subject for which he is motivated). Thus, a tractate from the Order of Moed* (note 5: Which deals with the festivals) concerns laws that it is necessary to know. You will also consult the Laws of Torah* Study by the Alter Rebbe*, which defines a study program for one who has only limited time. You will also see the introduction by the sons of the Alter Rebbe* to the Shulchan Aruch*, which also deals with the organization of study. Several teachings of the great ones of Yisrael apply furthermore in this matter. It would be good to consult with the elder Chassidim* on this point, specifying clearly to them that this concerns not a Yeshivah* with many hours of study (note 6: But rather a school in which the time reserved for sacred studies is limited).
You refer to study under compulsion (note 7: Which is perceived as a compulsion by the students). I hope that by providing, in your teaching, answers to the questions posed by the students, this compulsion will disappear in a short time, and you will increase all this in an ever broader manner, especially if you illustrate your words with examples and stories found in the Likkutei Dibburim* and in the Sichos*. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of all this, and you will observe the fruit of your efforts. You will have the merit and success of being "moistened to the point of moistening others" (note 8: Of ensuring that the students, in turn, transmit) in all that concerns the Torah* and the mitzvos*. The merit of what is public comes to your aid so that your action and effort in this matter be crowned with success. With my blessing to give good tidings, to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
the secretary,
ז'ד
