You ask me (note 1: This letter is addressed to Rav* David Helman, of Tel Aviv. See, concerning him, letter no. 6980) which books of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, you should purchase first for your library. You will begin with the Likkutei Dibburim*, which has recently appeared in four volumes. These will be sent to you from here, for I do not know whether one can already obtain them in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. Then you will acquire the series of Sefer HaSichos* and the collections of his letters.

You cite the words of the Rambam*, at the end of chapter 9 of the Laws of Teshuvah*, according to which "the world will conduct itself as usual" in the era of Moshiach*. The same assertion is found at the beginning of chapter 12 of his Laws of Kings. You will consult on this subject the Sefer Avodas HaKodesh* by Rabbi Meir Ben Gabai, volume 2, chapter 38. A quick reading of the Rambam* suffices to determine that he expresses his view very clearly regarding the events that will occur before the coming of Moshiach* and the order of their appearance. All of this will take place well before the beginning of the redemption. Here is what he says in chapter 11 of the Laws of Kings: "The King Moshiach* will come and he will restore the kingdom of David as before. He will build the Beis HaMikdash* and gather the exiles of Yisrael. Whoever does not await his coming denies the Torah*." It is only after this that he defines the nature of what Moshiach* will be and the order of events: "A king of the house of David, versed in the Torah* and devoting himself to the mitzvos* like David, he will lead all of Yisrael to follow it (note 2: The Torah*). He will wage the wars of Hashem and will vanquish all the peoples surrounding him."

If you write in French or in German, it would be good for you to pursue the publication of the articles you mention in your letter, through a local periodical — for example, a monthly. However, I do not know what best suits its readers. In this regard, you may contact Dr. Erman (note 3: Rav* Shlomo Erman. See, concerning him, letters nos. 5874 and 6708), who is on the spot. Of course, you may specify to him that you are contacting him on my advice. I know, indeed, that he has always been a friend of Lubavitch.

במש"כ בדברי הרמב"ם (הל' תשובה ספ"ט) שבימות המשיח עולם כמנהגו נוהג כו' - כן כתב ג"כ בהל' מלכים רפי"ב. ויעוין בזה בס' עבודת הקודש (לר"מ בן גבאי) ח"ב פל"ח. וגם ע"פ שטחיות לשו[נו] ברמב"ם בזה, הנה ברור הביע דעתו מוחלטה , אודות המאורעות שיהיו קודם התגלות המשיח וסדרן, ז.א. קודם שתתחיל הגאולה. וז"ל בהל' מלכים פי"א: המלך המשיח עתיד לעמוד ולהחזיר מלכות בית דוד ליושנה כו' ובונה המקדש ומקבץ נדחי ישראל כו' מי שאינו מחכה לביאתו... כופר בתורה כו' [וחא"כ מבאר מהותו וסדר המאורעות] מלך מבית דוד הוגה בתורה ועוסק במצות כדוד כו' ויכוף כל ישראל לילך בה כו' וילחם מלחמות ה' כו' ונצח כל האומות שסביביו.

באם כותב בצרפתית או אשכנזית - יש להתענין אודות הדפסת מאמריו שמזכיר במכתביו במכ"ע (ירחון?) המופיע שם. אלא שאיני יודע בפרטיות איזה חומר מתאים לקוראי המכ"ע. ויכול לפנות עדכ"ז לד"ר ערמן שם, ומובן שברשותו להוסיף שפונה אליו ע"פ הצעתי, כיון שמכירו הנני כידיד ליובאוויטש מאז ומקדם.
