Igrot Kodesh · Letter 700 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 3 · Letter 306 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,
28 Menachem Av 5710,

To the great Rav, Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav...,

Greetings and blessings,

I reply to your letter of Monday of Parshas Eikev, in which you ask me the following question. My father-in-law, the Rebbe, wrote to you that "it would be good to make the effort to come to the United States. Hashem will help you. You will have a good journey and your settling will be fruitful." Yet you observe that the administrative procedures are not advancing and that your situation is not secure. You therefore ask me what to do.

In my opinion, you must have the certainty that the promise of the Tzaddik*, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, will be realized. It is certain that Hashem will help you, that you will have a good journey, and will arrive successfully at your destination. It suffices that you be convinced, that you have emunah*, that you attach yourself to the Tzaddik of the generation, our head, my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

You ask me how to perform a seminal examination [1]. The sample is taken from the vagina, as quickly as possible after marital relations, and it is brought, with all speed, to the analysis laboratory.

The permission to do so is based on the responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Even HaEzer, end of chapter 9, which permits the use of a moch (cloth) during relations, and therefore, a fortiori, what has just been said. This contradicts the more stringent opinions cited by the Sdei Chemed, halachic compendium, in the article "Marriage," chapter 1, and Pe'as HaSadeh at the same place.

You will first consult a doctor, who will indicate to you how to take the sample so that the analysis can be performed.

You speak to me of your sufferings, but these surely emanate from your pessimism [2]. Torah Or* of the Alter Rebbe, Parshas Toldos, the commentary on the maamar entitled "Mayim Rabim," indicates what to do in such a case. He specifies that this pessimism can be transformed into ardor for study, on condition, of course, that this not weaken your health, Heaven forbid.

When I find myself at the gravesite of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I will read the requests for blessing that were attached to your letter. It is certain that the Tzaddik blesses, and Hashem fulfills in full the blessings, material and spiritual, of the Tzaddik, who is found in this world more than during his lifetime.

I conclude by extending my blessing and awaiting your good news,

Menachem Schneerson
