Igrot Kodesh · Letter 70 — Deepening the Tishrei/Nissan Dispute: Obligation, Freedom, and the Soul's Three Dimensions
Volume 1 · Letter 70
[Nissan 5703]
In this month of redemption, it is good to remember the words of our Sages. According to Rabbi Eliezer, the redemption, to which the Shofar of Rosh Hashanah alludes, will take place in Tishrei, while for Rabbi Yehoshua, it will take place in Nissan, for he compares it to the night of the Exodus from Egypt, protected since the six days of creation.
This divergence can be compared to another discussion that also opposes them. According to Rabbi Eliezer, the children of Israel will be liberated because they will do Teshuvah of their own accord and this is also what the Shofar evokes, since it is said: "if you improve your actions, Tishrei will redeem your sins."
For Rabbi Yehoshua, the children of Israel, even if they do not accede to Teshuvah on their own, will endure the presence of a cruel king that Hashem will send them to improve their behavior. This can be compared to the Exodus from Egypt, when they were liberated in order to receive the Torah. Now, our Sages emphasize that they received it under duress and this is why the mountain was held above their heads.
It is known that there exist three dimensions: space, time and soul. What has just been said concerns the latter two. Regarding the first, the distinction that must be made is very simple. For Rabbi Eliezer, the Jews will necessarily be meritorious and Hashem will therefore hasten the redemption, while for Rabbi Yehoshua, even if they do not have this merit, it will come in its time. What follows from this difference is explained elsewhere.
For all that, the Torah was indeed accepted under duress, for the children of Israel were not yet obligated to put it into practice, which is no longer the case at the present time.
In fact, even under duress, it is possible to observe it with all one's heart. Thus, the Rambam explains that he who, victim of his evil inclination, decides to neglect a Mitzvah, then undergoes flagellation until he puts it into practice, is in no way considered as having been forced to do so. For, deep within him, he wishes to be an integral part of the people of Israel.
