To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* Shneur Chaim (note 1: Rav* Sh. Ch. Gutnik, of Melbourne. See, concerning him, letter no. 4954) HaKohen,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, in which you ask me whether there is reason to invest your energy in the construction of the new Mikveh*. I am surprised that you could have any doubt in this matter, when you know the value and importance of such an accomplishment. As I heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, our masters did everything so that all possible improvements be brought to this matter. And, of course, I am not alluding to improvements in the Halachic* sense, which are but self-evident, but rather to external improvements — those that attract the heart of man. Moreover, this is not a mere deduction (note 2: That the Rebbe would have drawn from the words of the previous Rebbe). My father-in-law, the Rebbe, clearly indicated that this is indeed what he meant.

Purity leads to... (note 3: Holiness, and holiness to) the coming of the prophet Eliyahu*, herald of our righteous Moshiach*. May Hashem therefore grant that this undertaking hasten the liberation from all that obstructs the spreading of traditional Yiddishkeit*, in the appropriate manner. Each of us, within all of Yisrael, will do everything in his power in this matter, with a genuine effort that will assuredly be crowned with success, in accordance with the promise of our Sages* who say in this regard: "You will find" — and the meaning of this word was explained at a Chassidic* farbrengen*. Indeed, the results will be utterly disproportionate to the effort invested, to the point that they can be considered a "found object." This is self-evident. I read with pleasure, at the end of your letter, that you are fully devoted to the Chabad* institutions of your city. No doubt you will greatly strengthen this commitment, commensurate with the importance and value of the cause. May Hashem grant that the words of our Sages* can also be applied to the effort you will make in this matter: "You toiled and you found" — according to the interpretation previously stated. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this, as well as to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, in a general and more specific manner,

במענה למכתבו, בו שואל האם כדאי להשקיע מרץ בבנין מקוה חדשה.

ולפלא גם הספק בזה, בה בשעה שידוע גודל הענין וחשיבותו, וכמו ששמעתי כ"פ מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע עד כמה הקפידו רבותנו נשיאינו, שיהיו השיפורים במדה הכי גדולה [ופשיטא שאין המדובר בשיפורים הנוגעים ע"פ דין, דמאי קמ"ל, כ"א הכוונה לשיפורים חיצונים אלו שמושכים את לב [...] דהאדם, ולאו מכללא איתמר אלא בפירוש איתמר מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, שלזה נתכוונו]. אלא שפשוט גם זה שצ"ל הבני' עם כל ההדורים גם ע"פ דין וכידוע דברי התשב"ץ שבמקוה צריכים לצאת ידי כל הדיעות בזה.

ויהי רצון שכיון שטהרה מביאה וכו' אלי' הנביא מבשר ביאת משיח צדקנו יקרב הענין הנ"ל הגאולה מכל ענינים המבלבלים להפצת היהדות המסורתית כפי הדרוש וכאו"א מאתנו בתכ"י יעשה בזה ככל התלוי בו, ובאופן דויגעת ובודאי תקוים ההבטחה דרז"ל ומצאת, וכמבואר באחת ההתועדות, הדיוק בתיבת ומצאת, שהתוצאות תהיינה שלא בערך יותר מאשר היגיעה עד שיכונו בשם מציאה, וק"ל.

נעם לי לקרות בסיום מכתבו אשר מסור בלו"נ למוסדות חב"ד אשר במחנם הט' ובודאי שגם בזה הרי יוסיף כהנה וכהנה מתאים לחשיבות הענין וערכו, ויהי רצון שגם בהשתדלותו בזה יהי' הענין דויגעת ומצאת וככל הפירוש דלעיל.
