Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6985 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 486

By the grace of Hashem,

27 Menachem Av* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself

to communal needs, Rav* Shlomo Zalman (note 1: Rav* Sh. Z. Hecht, of Chicago. See, concerning him, letter no. 7479),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter from the eve of Shabbos*, following a long interruption. You speak of strengthening what concerns Chabad* in Chicago. I am surprised that you have any doubt and that you pose a question on this subject, when you know my view, applicable in every place and at all times, according to which not only strengthening is necessary, but also Ufaratzta* (note 2: "And you shall spread forth to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south," according to the slogan chosen by the Rebbe for this year. See, on this subject, letter no. 6541). This is also what we heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 6771), who explained: "In our era, a Jew can be compared to a man climbing a very steep mountain who therefore cannot remain in the same place. Either he ascends, or if not... (note 4: He falls)." If this was so at that time, how much more is it the case nowadays and in this country, when various circles are experiencing an awakening of their own initiative. Yet, to our great sorrow, it is public knowledge that those who should be in the front ranks (note 5: Of this effort to spread Jewish values) complain, groan, and fill themselves with the doubts already known from the era of the Haskalah*: "Might we not be exceeding the measure by reporting the truth without compromise in all that concerns the Torah* and the mitzvos*?" Yet if such action is expected of all observant Jews, how much more so is this the case for those who received the education of our masters and, in particular, that of the leader of our generation, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us.

Of course, I have said this many times to leaders of rabbinical organizations. I immediately sensed that the idea pleased them — as material for a speech, or even to divide it up and express it in several speeches, which would spare them the worry and trouble of wondering what they would talk about the following Shabbos* (note 6: In the discourse they deliver before their congregation). And there the matter rests. May Hashem therefore grant that this evening be followed by a morning — the morning of the One of the world, as our Sages* explain, commenting on the verse: "And it was... (note 7: Evening, and it was morning) one day," as at the creation of the world. And may this be revealed here below, as our Sages* explain in Tractate Pesachim* 50a. With my blessing of success in your sacred mission and in all that has just been said, and to give good tidings also of what concerns you personally,
