Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6981 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 482 · To: final
By the grace of Hashem,
23 Menachem Av* 5719,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter from this Tuesday, when "twice was the word 'good' said" (note 1: During the creation). As you ask me, I will once again mention the name of your son, to whom Hashem will grant long life, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. It seems to me that I have already indicated to you in the past that your origins come to your aid in preserving the health of body and soul alike. And you know the explanation of the Baal Shem Tov* regarding the verse: "When you see a donkey... you shall help him" (note 2: According to which one must elevate the body toward the service of Hashem and not break it), which is published in the Hayom Yom*, at the date of 28 Shevat* 5703.
To pass from one subject to another, I return to the beginning of your letter, to the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*. It is, of course, very advisable to emphasize on this occasion — and even in the strongest manner — the necessity of spreading the wellsprings of his teaching, of that of his disciples and the disciples of his disciples, since all form one and the same entity. You know the holy epistle of the Baal Shem Tov* relating that he asked (note 3: Moshiach*): "When will you come?" The answer he received was: "When your wellsprings spread forth outward." And each of these words is precise. The wellsprings must indeed reach the outside. And they must furthermore be spread. One must not bring commentaries and explanations to them, but truly transmit the wellsprings themselves, distinguishing oneself from those who make the error of thinking that one can spread the wellsprings only by expressing their concepts in the terminology of secular sciences, by giving them a natural appearance, by dismissing the miracle and even the possibility that it may occur, by denying the relationship between the Torah* and the concrete practice of the mitzvos* that it advocates.
The intellect of the animal soul itself understands that one can make compromises in various ways. All the more so can one lie. There exists, however, only one truth, even if one can grasp it and reach it in several ways: the way of Chabad* (note 4: The Attributes of the intellect), that of the intellect; the way of Chagas* (note 5: The Attributes of the emotion), that of the feelings of the heart; the way of Nehiy* (note 6: The Attributes of action), that of concrete action, of the foot, of all the limbs. Ultimately, it is necessary that the Torah* and the mitzvos* invest all the forces of the soul, its moral limbs and its physical limbs, from Chabad* to Nehiy*, from the head to the sole of the foot, including the forces of pleasure and will, even if advancement in the domain of holiness and good is, according to the injunction of our Torah*: "Little by little... (note 7: 'I will drive him out' — the evil)."
In accordance with what you write to me, I hope that you will use your influence for what has just been said and in the manner that has just been described, in order to orient others toward the truth. For Chassidus* is a complete teaching and not a mere study or abstract philosophical discourses. It regulates conduct, including during the days of the week. Certainly, personalities differ. With some, one must introduce one's words by speaking of the foot. With others, one must refer to the feelings, whereas in other cases, the intellect takes precedence. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to say more. With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings of all this,
