I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 13 Menachem Av*, in which you briefly describe what happened to you until your arrival in the Holy Land, as well as what you now intend to do to settle down and pursue your studies. You ask me what I think. My opinion in this matter is perfectly clear. You must continue your sacred studies for a significant period yet. You are in the Holy Land and there is therefore no reason to incur expenses to return to France in order to seek a place where you will continue your studies. Without a doubt, you will encounter difficulties there as well, whereas it is possible for you to continue your studies in the place where you currently are and where it seems to you that you can experience success.

You say that, inasmuch as you will need to settle down in the future, you must hasten to make preparations in this regard and interrupt your studies at the Yeshivah*. Now, the opposite is true, for Hashem, Who gives the Torah* and commands the mitzvos*, sustains everyone and He grants His Providence to all. In this case, He says that the necessary preparation for a Jewish man's life is study of our Torah*, the Torah* of life, for a substantial period. This is by no means time lost, which Hashem forbid — quite the contrary. And you know the image that is stated on this subject. If one wishes to build a good edifice, pleasing in every respect, it is necessary, above all, that the foundations be strong. If they are shaky, the beauty of the edifice will be of no use. And the same applies to the foundation of the life of Jews — that is, to the years and time they devote to the Torah* and to all that concerns it. If you wish to be happy during the decades that will follow, you must strengthen the foundations and, for this, greatly intensify your study of the Torah*, your practice of all that concerns it. You are at Kfar HaRoeh* and it would therefore be good to visit Rav* M. T. Nerya Shlita*, who will explain to you what seems difficult for you to understand. You may show him the present letter and he will develop its content for you, comment on it if necessary. With my blessing of success in all this,

במענה למכתבו מי"ג מנ"א, בו כותב ראשי פרקים מהשתלשלות הענינים עד שבא לאה"ק ת"ו. וסברות בהנוגע לאופן הסתדרותו ולימודו להבא, ושואל דעתי בזה.

ודעתי ברורה מוחלטה, אשר עליו להמשיך בלימודי קדש עוד משך זמן חשוב, וכיון שכבר נמצא באה"ק ת"ו, אין כדאיות ההוצאות לחזור לצרפת ולחפש שם מקום ללימוד, ובודאי יהיו כמה קישוים וכו', בה בשעה שיוכל להסתדר בלימוד במקום בו כותב, שנראה לו שהצליח שם. ובמה שכותב סברא, שכיון שצריך להסתדר בחייו בעתיד, עליו למהר בהכנות לזה, ולא ללמוד בישיבה, הנה אדרבה, כיון שהקב"ה נותן התורה ומצוה המצוה הוא הזן ומפרנס לכל ומשגיח על כל אחד ואחד בהשגחה פרטית, והוא גם כן ציוה שהכנה הכרחית לחיי איש הישראלי הוא לימוד זמן חשוב בתורתנו תורת חיים, אין זה איבוד זמן ח"ו אלא אדרבה ואדרבה, וכידוע המשל בזה אשר כשרוצים לבנות בנין שיהי' בנין טוב ומפואר בכל הפרטים, לכל לראש צריך לראות שהיסוד יהי' חזק ואמיץ, כי באם יהי' היסוד רעוע, אין כל תועלת ביופי הבנין וכו' וכן הוא בהנוגע ליסוד בחיים של בני ישראל, אשר הם הן השנים והזמנים שהוא מקדיש לתורה ועניני', ואם רוצה להיות מאושר בהעשיריות שנים שלאחרי זה, צריך לחזק היסוד, ז.א. להוסיף בלימוד התורה וקיום עניני' כהנה וכהנה.

כיון שנמצא בכפר הראה, מהנכון שיכנס שם להרב מ. צ. שליט"א נרי-ה, ויבאר לפניו את הבעיא שלו, ויכול להראותו גם מכתבי זה, ובודאי אשר יפרט לו את הענין עוד יותר ויסבירו באם זקוק לעוד ביאור בזה.
