Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6972 — Chinuch
Volume 18 · Letter 472
By the grace of Hashem,
16 Menachem Av* 5719,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and
devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* M. Lisman,
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter, in which you briefly describe the objective of your activity. I learned, in particular, with satisfaction from the copies of "the organ for the unity of Yisrael" that you give a public Gemara* class. In accordance with the teaching of our Sages*, I hope that this study will lead to action in daily life, particularly for those who exercise an influence on a certain milieu. Indeed, all study, even if it has no bearing on action, at least at first glance, nonetheless forges a worldview. In this case, it therefore shapes that of your students. In our era, particular attention is necessary in this matter, and various fundamental points must even be rectified, even though the principle of the Mishnah* according to which the act is essential remains always valid.
You belong to a movement, according to what you tell me in your letter, one of whose fundamental rules is obedience, the carrying out of orders, enlistment not only in times of combat, but also in standing ready to comply with the words of the officer, including during periods described as "normal." For this reason, I would like to specify the following point more particularly. According to the saying and the decisive teaching of our master, the Baal Shem Tov*, which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, constantly repeated: "Everything a Jew sees or hears is an effect of Divine Providence and conveys to him a lesson for achieving his objective and the mission he receives in the world — the fulfillment of the Torah* and the mitzvos* in all your ways." Now, it seems difficult to fully satisfy such a demand. For the feeling and understanding of man can evolve, not only in different periods, but also in the same year, the same month, the same day. This is not the case for the demand thus formulated, which is always the same.
The explanation of all this can be found in a fundamental concept stated in the Mechilta*, at Parshas Yisro*, according to which the prerequisite for the giving of the Ten Commandments and the Torah* was the following: "When you accept My Kingship, I will issue Decrees for you." And one accepts His Kingship through submission to Him, which, in fact, depends neither on understanding nor on feeling. Indeed, intellect and emotion are but means of perceiving or feeling, but in this matter they are not essential. Moreover, a submission beyond all rationality subsequently enables one to understand and feel more deeply. The fundamental rule of the movement to which you belong therefore offers a specific possibility of transmitting our Torah*, the Torah* of life, and the concrete practice of the mitzvos* in daily life, in a particular, more favorable manner, thus distinguishing oneself from those who make the error of saying that young people in our era cannot bear obedience and submission. On the contrary, this is one of the most effective means of conquering the hearts of the youth — not only those who are religious or half-religious, but indeed all the young people who enlist, who effectively answer the call, provided that they are given a true and profound explanation.
At first glance, such a call does not enthuse their intellect and their emotion, but ultimately it will indeed be so, however one explains it — in a very coarse manner or in a somewhat more refined way — by listening to the animal soul, which will say that enlistment and subjection to an officer whose authority cannot be contested frees the one who has been enlisted from his responsibility and from the need to make a decision at every step. But the true explanation is: "the lamp of Hashem (which) is the soul of man" — that of the Divine soul. This soul is, by nature, a part of the Divine, and it is drawn to its source and origin. In the words of the Alter Rebbe*, this nature "transcends understanding, the intellect perceived and comprehended," which are but external instruments of the essence of this soul. In any case, this fundamental and decisive point exists in every young person. We have been able to observe in our era to what extent it is precisely submission that has conquered the hearts of the young — through the number of their years as through their hidden strengths and their courage. Indeed, in recent years, disappointments have multiplied in various domains. Thousands, tens of thousands of young people find no foundation, no base upon which they can stand. Fortunate, therefore, is the lot of whoever issues the following call: "Enlist in the armies of Hashem, Who gives the Torah* and commands the mitzvah*!" In this way, one will convince, one after another, all the circles of the lost youth. For here two points come together and converge: the character traits specific to each individual, on the one hand, and an army in the literal sense, on the other, for the Torah* of truth is a Torah* of life, instilling the life of this world — not only at a powerful moment such as the Neilah* prayer of Yom Kippur*, but equally at every instant of the week.
This conquest of the youth, from one milieu to another, from one circle to another, is the necessary condition for the end of the present exile, which differs from those that preceded it. The past deliverances were not complete, and a portion of the Jews remained in exile then, materially or spiritually. This will not be the case for the present exile. We have been given the assurance that we will experience the true and complete redemption — from the apparent exile as from the profound exile, from the physical exile as from the moral exile. The salvation of every Jewish soul will therefore hasten the collective redemption. This is also the foundation of Chassidus*, which emphasizes the importance of the precept: "You shall love your fellow as yourself" and the spreading of its wellsprings outward. Every step in this direction brings closer the end of the exile and the beginning of the redemption, which will be true and complete. One must therefore neglect no action. Who can measure the importance of what is accomplished when a single young man puts on Tefillin* or a single young woman recites the Shema Yisrael*? This is not merely a specific act performed by a specific person on a specific day. All of this adds up to constitute a great whole, each detail of which is the condition that enables the hastening of the collective redemption. With my respects and my blessing,
