Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6971 — Faith & Bitachon
By the grace of Hashem,
16 Menachem Av* 5719,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and assumes a
sacred mission, Rav* Avraham Mordechai Shmuel (note 1: Rav* A. M. Sh. Lieder, of Kfar Chabad*. See, concerning him, letter no. 5409),
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos Nachamu* and I read with pleasure that you have had weeks of Ufaratzta* (note 2: "And you shall spread forth to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south," according to the slogan chosen by the Rebbe for this year — that is, weeks of spreading Jewish values. See, on this subject, letter no. 6541). Various texts, particularly of Chassidus*, explain precisely that a week includes within it all the moments, from the beginning to the end of the six millennia of creation. This is why one says, at the beginning of each week (note 3: In the morning prayer, after Shabbos* has allowed a return to the origin of time): "Today is the first day." May the Ufaratzta* of these weeks therefore spread over the weeks that follow. We have been given the assurance that one who sanctifies himself slightly here below receives from above an immense sanctification. How much more so is this the case for one who sanctifies himself more than slightly. This is self-evident. Now, according to Chassidus*, this holiness does not consist of isolating oneself in the desert or concentrating on the Light preceding the Tzimtzum* (note 4: The contraction of this Light, which is at the origin of creation), without concerning oneself with what is happening around oneself.
Quite the contrary — according to a well-known story we received from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe* admonished someone who was devoting himself to the study of the Torah* and who, in this way, did not hear the cries of a child who had fallen from his cradle. Every detail of the stories of our masters conveys a teaching. Now, all the aspects of this one attest that the lesson it teaches, what should be drawn from it, is particularly precise. In this case, those who must be considered as children, who define themselves as such also when they are lying down and sleeping, because they are in a cradle and not in a simple bed, can experience a fall during their sleep. Conversely, one who devotes himself to study does so with ardor and constancy, in the most profound manner. He can therefore not hear the cries of a child. Despite this, a soul that was descending to this world for the first time, from the world of Atzilus* (note 5: The Alter Rebbe*), delivered to him a teaching according to which it is not fitting to adopt such conduct, to not feel such a low situation manifesting itself in the world, within materiality itself. The teaching of all this, which one must learn and put into practice, is quite clear. I send you my blessing to give good tidings of the points you raise in your letter, of your communal achievements, and of your personal concerns. At a propitious moment, I will mention all these persons at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, so that you give good tidings of all this, in an ever-increasing manner. With my blessing,
