Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6969 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 469 · To: final

By the grace of Hashem,

14 Menachem Av* 5719,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 8/9, which is filled with questions and objections. I hope it is unnecessary to explain to you that one never achieves anything by beginning with questions, and even less by grouping several of them together. If one wishes to understand a certain idea, and all the more so a worldview that encompasses all of existence, one must first remove all prejudice and, even more, set aside the attitude of: "I must find a flaw or a deficiency and, if possible, several shortcomings and several objections" (note 1: This is presumably a quotation from the letter to which the Rebbe is responding here). Certainly, our Sages* say that "the timid person does not learn," but I observe, upon reading your letter, that you are not merely asking questions. You are, in fact, raising objections, as I said, or perhaps even more than that. Despite what I have just written, I grant you extenuating circumstances. Ultimately, you surely have good intentions, but no one has taught you how to approach an idea and a worldview. You are therefore not responsible for the approach you adopt in your letter. For this reason, I will respond to your questions, at least briefly. The nature of such questions is that they are better understood through oral discussion. Without a doubt, several Chassidim* or the people at the Yeshivah* where you are a student could have given the following answers to the questions you pose. Orally, one can develop these ideas, add further explanations on the aspects that are problematic for the one who receives them. In written correspondence, however, it is not always easy to determine what has not been grasped and what is merely secondary.

A) Is it possible to demonstrate that the Torah* was given on Sinai by the Holy One, blessed be He? Such a proof has already been articulated in several of my letters (note 2: See, in particular, letter no. 6876), as well as in the books of the great ones of Yisrael, published long ago. Moreover, you can find an illustration in your own life, in most of your behaviors. I mean that when you perform an action requiring great effort or much money, you do not always impose upon yourself a complete verification of what will result from that effort. Concretely, you rely on others. Take a simple example. When you purchase a ticket to travel to a certain place, you do not first go and examine the engine and the train, learn how it works, in order to be certain that the journey for which your ticket entitles you will actually bring you to your destination. This is so not only in areas where the outcome of the effort is immediate and can be observed after a brief moment, but also when these consequences manifest only after several years. Observe your own conduct and you will see that you rely not on yourself but on those whom you trust, whom you do not suspect of lying to you, and who have no interest in deceiving you.

The greater the number of those who bear witness to the value of an action, the stronger will be your decision to rely on them. Moreover, you will do so even in a matter of life and death — for example, for a major surgical procedure, which Hashem forbid. One then trusts a surgeon who holds a diploma attesting that he was trained under a specialist ten or twenty years ago, establishing that he is himself a competent physician. It is also desirable that witnesses attest to having been treated by him and to having observed the effectiveness of the treatment. Now, by relying on this testimony, one allows a man to perform a particularly complicated operation, even though he is but a single person, whom many others could replace. During this operation, this man may err or fail, even if, until now, he has consistently succeeded in such procedures. In such a case, the basis of the conduct one adopts is indeed trust in the testimony of other people. Nevertheless, when it concerns an important matter, you do not content yourself with a single testimony, or two, or three. You seek many more. And this rule of conduct is even more widely applied regarding events of previous eras. Indeed, it is impossible to verify their accuracy. Yet no normal person questions the statements of three or four scholarly historians, even if they contradict one another on certain points. One then adopts the opinion of the majority, especially when it is overwhelming — one against ten, against a hundred, or against a thousand. Such testimony is then considered an absolute truth.

After this introduction, I specify that the giving of the Torah* on Mount Sinai by the Holy One, blessed be He, is not a new fact introduced in our era. We received it from our parents, and they themselves from their own parents. This tradition and this account thus follow the thread of generations, and at each epoch, the event was transmitted with great precision by hundreds of thousands of men from radically different backgrounds. Now, all these accounts have been convergent, and since the giving of the Torah*, the tradition has never been modified or altered. The generation of children that entered Eretz Yisrael* with Yehoshua* received it from their parents, who had left Egypt and who had themselves stood near Mount Sinai, who had personally heard: "I am Hashem your Elokim." It is quite evident that if this information had been introduced during an intermediate generation (note 3: Between the giving of the Torah and the present era), it would have been impossible for hundreds of thousands of people to agree to disseminate it. Surely someone would have said to his friend: "What is this new thing being spoken of in the land, of which we have never had knowledge?" If you meditate well on all this, you will be able to develop this thought, which, as I said, is particularly strong compared to all the ideas you accept on the basis of an account of what happened ten or twenty years ago.

B) One cannot raise, against what has just been said, the following objection: the Christians and the Muslims number several million. Indeed, such an observation is radically different. The Christian tradition is, in the end, reduced to a single person, the emissary Shaul (note 4: Paul), or at most to ten or twelve emissaries who declared they had heard such-and-such a statement from such-and-such a person. However, they themselves did not receive this prophecy. This means that the tradition is reduced to a single person of flesh and blood, who can err or go astray, inadvertently or intentionally. The same applies to the Muslims, whose "faith" began when Mohammed returned from the desert and reported that he had received "prophecy" there.

C) Can non-Jews perceive all this and ascend to the highest levels? The Rambam* rules the Halachah*, in his Laws of Kings, chapter 8, paragraph 11, that the Righteous among the nations will have a share in the World to Come.

D) You cannot explain to yourself why non-Jews do not have all the opportunities offered to Jews. Yet this can be justified in different ways. The essential reason is that we do not know the ways of the Creator, His motivations, His manner of intervening in certain cases. The same applies to the different members of the microcosm that is man. It is impossible for the foot to comprehend the intellect of the brain, and the brain will never achieve the emotion of the heart. In other words, each member of this small world receives a specific function. Some members are more refined and others more coarse. Nevertheless, each member must fulfill its mission and not that of another. If it fulfills its own mission, that member attains perfection and reaches its goal. Now, the same applies to the great world, of which we ourselves are a part. The mineral has its place in it, just as does man. Each category receives a purpose, as the Zohar*, volume 3, page 221b, explains — that Yisrael among the nations is like the heart within the body. The hand and the foot will therefore never have a feeling as intense as the heart. The hand must write and move. The foot must walk. Now, you do not ask why the foot does not write or why the heart does not understand. In the same way, your question has no meaning.

E) What has just been said also answers the following question you posed: Who is greater — the Righteous among the nations or the wicked of Yisrael? The answer depends on what you mean by this. Are you alluding to potential strengths or to their actual use? One can use here the image of a heart and a brain that do not fulfill their mission — what is commonly called a sick heart and a sick brain, which Hashem forbid — and a healthy foot. Which is superior to the other?

F) According to what is accepted and according to tradition, we are in the year 5719 since the creation of the world. How can this assertion be reconciled with scientific dating (note 5: See, on this subject, letters nos. 3868 and 4409)? I will respond briefly to this question. All sciences, including those that define themselves as exact, are based on premises that have no logical foundation but that are accepted. In general, the same applies to the science that researches the history and evolution of the earth. Among these premises, one may cite the following: one must assume that the laws of nature have not evolved at all, that in this year 5719, they have remained identical to what they have always been since the world has existed, without the slightest change. One must assume that atmospheric pressure, temperature, the quantity of radium, as well as hundreds and thousands of parameters relating to the earth have practically remained identical to what they were at the time. And there are many more postulates that cannot be proven at all.

Above all, if one considers that the world could not have been created in an ordered and structured manner, that at first there were only a few atoms, one must assume that these subsequently combined in the manner and at the rate we know today, without the slightest change, including when the world was "desolate and void." When all these conditions are met, it indeed requires a certain number of years for the world to emerge from destruction, for animals and humans to be found in it. Conversely, if one abandons some of these postulates, all the scientific conclusions disappear. Indeed, can one accept, logically, that Hashem is not capable of creating a man, Adam, in his full state, that He first had to bring forth atoms so that these would subsequently combine?

I have written all that is set forth above in order to put your mind at ease, but, once again, there is no reason to proceed in this manner, raising objections. One must study the Torah* and observe the mitzvos*. Thus you will experience success in all that concerns you — in general, in the understanding of the worldview one must have, in particular. It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked and for you to adopt the three daily studies concerning the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, which are well known. We heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that they concern everyone and that they are beneficial in various domains. With my blessing,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

The secretary,

You will find proof that scientific dating and the number of years to which it arrives are not precise in the fact that the calculations established by the different disciplines — geology, astronomy, research into radioactive effects — contradict one another. And the scientists are unable to resolve these contradictions.
