Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6967 — Health

Volume 18 · Letter 467 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

13 Menachem Av* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself

to communal needs, great scholar, Rav* Sh. Y. (note 1: Rav* Shlomo Yosef Zevin. See, concerning him, letter no. 6925),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter from the eve of Rosh Chodesh* Menachem (note 2: Av*). You raise the issue of the Chief Rabbinate (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 6925). Various reports and rumors that are received here, directly, indirectly, or in a completely roundabout manner, indicate that the current discussions have no impact, that they will not have a great influence on reality, or perhaps will have none at all. Indeed, the elections in this matter will take place several months after those of the Knesset*. Now, the Chief Rabbinate is henceforth tied to the parties (note 4: Religious political parties). These elections, following those of the Knesset*, will therefore make it possible to evaluate the respective weight of each of these parties.

I have duly received your book, "Authors and Works," comprising two volumes. I was waiting, before acknowledging receipt, for the third volume, which has been discussed in various publications. For the present, I still have not received it, but you inquire about this and I therefore confirm having duly received these two volumes. In accordance with the custom of Jews, I will formulate a remark at the outset. One should compare the part of these two books devoted to the inner dimension of the Torah* with that which presents its revealed teaching. Furthermore — an essential point — one must take into account the fact that several authors can treat the revealed dimension of the Torah*, which is not the case for its hidden teaching. Concretely, you should have devoted a more substantial portion to the inner teaching of the Torah* which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. Moreover, our era has had the merit of witnessing the broadest dissemination of Chassidus* — Chassidus* Chabad* and Chassidus* in general. It is, however, quite clear that what concerns you most is Chassidus* Chabad*.

To my surprise, I see that you reference, in the section on Chabad*, the Haggadah* with a collection of customs and explanations (note 5: Of which the Rebbe is the author). I did not know this, and I am somewhat surprised, for our Sages* say: "One who gives a gift to someone must inform him of it" (note 6: The recipient of this gift). I make this remark because there may be other texts in this same category. If this is indeed the case, kindly send them to me. I thank you in advance.

To change the subject while remaining in the same context, I asked some time ago that the latest Kehot* publications, in the area of the revealed teaching of the Torah*, be sent to you, in addition to what is printed of Chassidus*. It would be good, at the first opportunity, for you to publish articles on this subject. I will add to all this a remark of a technical nature. It would be good to note in your books: "volume 1" and "volume 2" or, if there is no common thread between them, to find a way to distinguish them.

It seems to me that at this time of year, you are accustomed to changing your location — that is, in the common expression, to "take a vacation." Now, the contradiction revealed by this formulation is quite evident, for a vacation cannot be "taken." It must be "received," for if you can take it yourself, it means you are already free (note 7: Chofshi*, of the same etymology as chofesh*, vacation. It is therefore one who depends on an employer who can "receive" a vacation from that employer). Moreover, this contradicts the fact that: "You are My servants" (note 8: A Jew is therefore, at all times, subject to Hashem and, as such, is never "free"). In any case, you understand what I mean. Your purpose, in this instance, is to be in good health and, consequently, the Torah* authorizes such a course of action. May Hashem therefore grant that you experience success, that this vacation bring you true freedom. And, "only one who devotes himself to the Torah* is truly free." With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings,

M. Schneerson,
