By the grace of Hashem,

8 Menachem Av* 5719,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 5 Menachem Av*, in which you describe in a few words what has happened to you recently. I have good hope that in every place where you find yourself, you do not forget, which Hashem forbid, the mission incumbent upon every Jew. For, in the words of the Mishnah*, "I was created to serve my Creator" and, as various texts establish, this form of the service of Hashem is the path of daily life, in connection with the Torah* and the mitzvos*. In this matter, there is a great principle, as it is said: "You shall love your fellow as yourself." One must therefore influence one's surroundings, so that they in turn adopt the same conduct. Our Sages* give the assurance that "words emanating from the heart (note 1: Of the one who speaks them) penetrate the heart (note 2: Of the one who hears them)." The essential point is that the heart of every Jew is awake for the Holy One, blessed be He, for His Torah* and for His mitzvos*. Nevertheless, in some cases, the profound dimension of this heart is covered with a layer of earth and clay. But when someone comes to his aid to remove this layer that veils and conceals, he must provide him with the means to achieve this, consciously or without his knowing it. This is what the holy Tanya* explains at length regarding the hidden love that all Jews bear for Hashem in their hearts and which they have inherited from their ancestors. At present, the time has come not to wait, before coming to the aid of others, until one has oneself reached one's own fullness. These objectives must be achieved conjointly (note 3: One must simultaneously perfect oneself and devote oneself to others). Moreover, each category of actions fosters all the others, as one can verify concretely. You are currently leading a life based on obedience and submission (note 4: The recipient of this letter is presumably in the army). No doubt you therefore reason as follows in your mind: if this is so for the orders of a man of flesh and blood (note 5: For example, an officer), how much more so is it the case for the command received from the Creator of man, the King, Supreme King, the Holy One, blessed be He.

You refer to your father and you ask me whether he should change his work. In such a case, one should not abandon the means one has of earning a livelihood before being practically certain that one will be able to earn a living through the means one intends to adopt. At a propitious moment, I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of all this, including, of course, of the spreading of the wellsprings (note 6: Of Chassidus*). It is thus that one hastens the fulfillment of the promise according to which this period (note 7: Between 17 Tammuz and 9 Av) will be transformed into joy, gladness, and "an inheritance without limit." With my blessing to give good tidings,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,

Of course, a union with a young woman whose relationship with the Torah* and the mitzvos* is not what it should be would entail many complications that one cannot always imagine from the outset.
