Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6964 — Faith & Bitachon

By the grace of Hashem,

6 Menachem Av* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To the directors of the teachers' training center

of Beis Rivka* and the Beis Rivka* school in France,

may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 3 Menachem Av*, with what was enclosed — the study program for the first year of the teachers' training center. I read its details with pleasure. Regarding some elements mentioned therein, and to the extent possible, you will receive a letter from the Merkaz LeInyonei Chinuch*. But I must add the following point. On Fridays, studies must also begin with sacred subjects, in addition to prayer, at least for a few minutes. This study will be related to the day — that is, it will deal with the weekly Parshah*. Indeed, the Shulchan Aruch* says that on this day, one reads each verse twice and the Targum* once. Likewise, during these weeks, one should provide "provisions" to the students. I allude to the vacation period. Moreover, during these months, particularly in Tishrei*, an addition is necessary to everything that concerns Yiddishkeit*, our Torah* and its mitzvos*. Indeed, there are many laws and customs, more than during the rest of the year. According to the possibilities, it would be good to design an adapted structure that will not be disturbed by the vacations and that will be devoted to what has just been said. The students will come of their own free will and not under the compulsion of the training center or the school. Practice proves that these days are propitious for a positive perception of Jewish values. Moreover, logic establishes that this is so, since the study is linked to the concrete practice of the festivals, of what precedes and follows them. Their influence is then felt throughout the rest of the year. The same applies in the profound dimension as well. It is known, indeed, that each festival has a general import, which is then preserved throughout the year. Thus, Rosh Hashanah* brings submission to Hashem, Yom Kippur* brings teshuvah*, and Sukkos* brings the joy of the mitzvah*.

In a general way, when there is a doubt about a textbook, one must adopt a stringent position, inasmuch as it concerns the education of the young. In this matter, one must guard against even a slight deficiency. According to the well-known image, a small notch on the seed becomes an immense hole on the adult tree, which Hashem forbid. This is self-evident. And one cannot give oneself permission, in this matter, for books that have several authors whose names are not mentioned and which are therefore anthologies, by telling oneself that only the choice of a book entirely conceived by a single author would be a means of authorizing everything it contains.

In these days, about which our Sages* say in Tractate Shabbos* 119b: "Yerushalayim was destroyed solely because the children ceased to study the Torah* there," everyone within all of Yisrael will strive to rectify this situation by means of an addition and a special effort for the education of the children of Yisrael based on sacred values. It is clear that this also includes the education of girls. As the Decisors state, in particular the Laws of Torah* Study of the Alter Rebbe*, at the end of chapter 1, women are also obligated to study the Laws that concern them — that is, the positive commandments that have no specific time of application and all the prohibitions of the Torah* and the Sages*. This will hasten the fulfillment of the promise according to which these days will be transformed into joy and gladness. And we will obtain "an inheritance without limit." With my respects and my blessing for success,
