By the grace of Hashem,

21 Tammuz* 5719,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 15 Tammuz*, in which you tell me that you are being proposed to teach Gemara* in a mixed class, to boys and girls. Now, such coeducation raises two problems — that of teaching Gemara* to girls, on the one hand, and that of coeducation, on the other, all the more so since, from the formulation of your question, it appears that these are older children.

Regarding the first problem, one must be cautious. One must not call into question the prevailing custom in your locality, particularly in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, "upon which the eyes of Hashem are always directed, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year." If there is no established custom in this matter, one must conform to the Halachic* ruling of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, in his Laws of Torah* Study, at the end of the first chapter, according to which women are also obligated to study the Torah*. One should therefore choose a tractate that refers to these laws (note 1: Concerning women).

As for the second problem, it is, from various perspectives, more serious than the first. One must therefore endeavor, to the extent possible, that there indeed be a separation (note 2: See, on this subject, letter no. 6537) during the time of study, even if this is not the case for the lessons of other teachers. You must, at least insofar as you are concerned, emphasize the importance of such a separation. This will be, on your part, a way of protesting (note 3: Against the idea of eliminating the separation), and this will give those who, for the present, do not accept the separation, the opportunity to reflect on this question, upon observing the success encountered in places where it exists. This is self-evident.

I am surprised that you tell me nothing about your participation in the Chassidic* farbrengen* of the festival of the liberation of 12 and 13 Tammuz*. No doubt you also spoke with your students about the imprisonment and the deliverance, insofar as it concerns them. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,

N.B.: In accordance with your request, this letter is sent to you ahead of the queue.
