I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter from this Monday, with what was enclosed. At a propitious moment, I will mention your name and that of the members of your family at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. You allude to a surgical procedure on the fallopian tubes. This does not suit me at all, for it would result in a practically permanent impossibility of pregnancy. You mention other means and you are presumably alluding to contraception. You should consult, on this subject, a Rav* who rules on Halachah* and present to him, in detail, what the doctor says. It should be noted, however, that even if some consider your situation an incompatibility of blood (note 2: The recipient of this letter wrote to the Rebbe: "At the birth of our eldest son, we learned that there was an incompatibility between my wife's blood and mine, due to the Rh factor. Indeed, she has a negative Rh factor and this can sometimes be harmful to future children"), this has no effect on the children who are born. It also happens that before the birth, the situation improves. In this case, you tell me that your wife is experiencing difficulties. These can no doubt be explained by what has just been said, more so than by the blood incompatibility. And the difference is quite evident. When your wife has recovered, one can think that all the risks in this matter will disappear.

In every situation and at all times, we have received the Injunction to experience elevation in the domain of holiness, to intensify the practice of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, especially when one needs an increased blessing from the One Who gives the Torah* and commands the mitzvos*. It would therefore be judicious for you and your wife to proceed accordingly, in keeping with your situation. I would like, first of all, to emphasize to you the necessity of setting aside a fixed time for the study of the inner dimension of the Torah*, which in our era has been revealed through Chassidus*. If in every place and at all times it has been a necessity to do so, how much more so is this the case in our era and in this country. It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked, as well as the mezuzos* of your home, to ensure that they are all in conformity with the Halachah*. Likewise, your wife will maintain the positive custom of virtuous Jewish women, which consists of giving tzedakah* before lighting the candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals. במענה למכתבו מיום השני עם המצורף אליו.

בעת רצון יזכירוהו ואת ב"ב שי' על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע לתוכן כתבו.

ובמ"ש אודות נתוח של הצנורות - לא נראה לי זה כלל וכלל, והרי זהו שולל אפשריות הריון כמעט לתמיד. ובמה שמזכיר עצות אחרות, כנראה כוונתו למנוע הריון, עליו לשאול דעת רב מורה הוראה ויפרט לפניו דברי הרופא בזה.

אבל להעיר שלפעמים תכופות, אף שיש שקורים לזה התנגדות בדם, אין זה משפיע כלל על הנולדים. ועוד קורה, שלפני הלידה משתנה המצב לטוב וכו', והרי בנדון דידן, כיון שכותב שזוגתו תחי' יש לה קישוים כו' אפשר לבאר הענינים שכותב בזה, ולא בהדמים, והנפק"מ פשוטה, שע"י שתתחזק זוגת' בבריאותה, יש מקום לומר שיבטלו כל החששות שבענין.

והנה בכל ענין ובכל זמן נצטוינו להעלות בקדש להוסיף בעניני תורה ומצות ובפרט כשזקוקים לתוספת ברכה מנותן התורה ומצוה המצוה, ולכן מהנכון שהוא וזוגתו תחי' יוסיפו בהנ"ל מתאים למעמדם ומצבם, ובעיקר באתי לעוררו על ההכרח לקבוע לימוד בפנימיות התורה אשר בדורנו נתגלתה בתורת החסידות, שאם בכל הזמנים ובכל המקומות הי' הכרח בזה, עאכו"כ בתקופתנו ובמדינה זו.

מהנכון אשר יבדקו את התפילין שלו וכן את המזוזות בדירתם שתהיינה כולן כשרות כדין, וכן אשר זוגתו תחי' תשמור על מנהגן הטוב של בנות ישראל הכשרות, להפריש לצדקה קודם הדלקת הנרות בכל ערב שבת וערב יום טוב.
