Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6937 — Chinuch
Volume 18 · Letter 436 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
16 Tammuz* 5719,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of
multiple accomplishments, of good conduct,
filled with eagerness, Rav* Chananya Yom Tov Lippa (note 1: Rav* Ch. Y. T. L. Deutsch, of Cleveland, Rabbi of Helmitz. See, concerning him, letter no. 6253),
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter from the day of the liberation, 13 Tammuz*, the deliverance of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, leader of Yisrael, which marked the rescue and the victory of the Torah* and its mitzvos* in their entirety, as the account of the imprisonment and the liberation allows one to establish. This is self-evident. You tell me that you have been questioned about your efforts, in various places, so that a proper mikveh* exist there, including in places where the practice of the Torah* and the mitzvos* must still be improved in a radical way or even more than that (note 2: Is the mikveh a priority in such a case?). You ask me what I think of this.
Be therefore strong and redouble your ardor in order to strengthen and spread purity in Yisrael, in every place you can reach. Regarding your question, the criterion to be retained is the following, as my father-in-law, the Rebbe, himself heard from his father (note 3: The Rebbe Rashab*), whose merit protects us, according to a response given to him by his own father, the Rebbe Maharash*, whose merit protects us, during an audience he granted him. This is printed in the Hayom Yom*, at the date of 23 Sivan* (note 4: Does it result in a strengthening of the practice of the Torah and the mitzvos, or not?). Nevertheless, it must be noted that the publicity that was made around your participation in this matter did not concern the conformity of the mikveh*. For all that, if someone wants to deceive himself, let him do so and draw a conclusion that is not appropriate, even if it is the opposite of what should be done. In my view, it is therefore preferable to avoid such publicity to the highest degree. This is what I do myself in such situations, based on what I have observed. One must do everything to save a Jew, whoever he may be, including if he belongs to a category as low as the one cited in Tractate Sanhedrin* 44a (note 5: Those who contravene the covenant of our father Avraham — that of circumcision). What Rashi* says at this reference is, moreover, wonderful: such men fully retain their sanctity. And Rabbeinu Chananel* specifies: "The Torah* calls them Yisrael" (note 6: The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "The Word of Hashem is, properly speaking, an action and is not merely 'like an action,' according to Tractate Shabbos 119b"). One must therefore preserve them from transgression, including when it concerns the most lenient injunction of our Sages*, and how much more so regarding the foundations of the Law and what concerns all generations. The demand and the necessity in this matter are immense, as one can deduce from the prohibition pronounced by the Torah* of the transfer of inheritance (note 7: For example from one brother to another), even from the bad to the good, for the bad may have good children. This is self-evident.
You ask me about spending the night in a hotel (note 8: Run by non-Jews). We have observed that our masters did so without any apprehension. This was known to all. Indeed, many people enter these hotels at all times. And you should consult, in this regard, Tractate Sukkah* 32b, which says: "He endeavored to do so, for such was the teaching emanating from the mouth of Rav Kahana" (note 9: A disciple must endeavor to put into practice the teachings of his master). With my respects and my blessing for success in your sacred mission, as well as to give good tidings,
What you say about spending the night at a hotel also applies to the representation of human faces by means of a photograph, since our masters used them.
