By the grace of Hashem,
14 Tammuz* 5719,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet you and bless you,
May Hashem grant that the fraternal conflicts diminish, that the time finally come for these brothers to conform to the meaning of the term "brother," evoking fraternity and friendship. It is surely unnecessary to specify my hope in the accomplishment and realization of this fraternity. Indeed, true peace is based on that of the soul and the body, of the divine soul and the animal soul, of the two inclinations, or, in the formulation of the Alter Rebbe*, that of the earthly Sanctuary and the heavenly Sanctuary. Of course, the divine soul cannot accept the sovereignty of the animal soul. Simultaneously, the animal soul and even the evil inclination also carry within them a spark of holiness. One must therefore strengthen and kindle this spark, until it becomes a candle, a torch, a flame of fire and light, until the spirit dominates matter, until spirituality dominates materiality, until the divine aspect of man prevails over his animal aspect. True and lasting peace, real fraternity and friendship, are therefore based on our immutable Torah*, Torah* of life, and on its mitzvos*. In fact, as the great master, the Rambam*, rules at the end of his Laws of Chanukah*: "The Torah* was given to bring about peace in the world."
Finding myself still under the influence of the Chassidic* farbrengen* of the day of the liberation, I allow myself to conclude my remarks with a saying that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, related when he arrived in the United States, regarding his own liberation. His rescue, which was miraculous, did not merely have the import of a personal deliverance. It was the deliverance of all the domains of the Torah* for which he had fought. This was precisely the reason for his imprisonment. The conclusion he drew was the necessity of promoting, in the United States, an education based on the Torah* without compromise. And one can thus justify the relationship between the two elements. He carried out his work with self-sacrifice, going against natural reasoning. For it is in this way that one gives of one's very person — through the essence of one's soul, which cannot be divided, all of whose parts have the same force, the same determination, in the entirety of the soul and the body. From this perspective, the very principle of a compromise is ruled out, for it is conceivable only when one can distinguish an essential aspect and an accessory one. One can then envision abandoning the second to preserve the first. The essence, however, is identical in every specific aspect. From that point, the most insignificant detail becomes the equivalent of the most fundamental. The same applies to the quality of the Jews. In the formulation of the Alter Rebbe*, "all Jews are truly brothers, through the source of their soul in the One Hashem." The same applies to the Torah* and its mitzvos*. When a decree is issued against the practice of a mitzvah*, even if it concerns modifying the wearing of shoelaces, one must then give of one's very person. This likewise applies to the essence of Eretz Yisrael*, "the land upon which the eyes of Hashem are always directed." Regarding it, no distinction can be made in time — "from the beginning of the year to the end of the year" — nor in space, from the Foundation Stone of the Holy of Holies to the dust at the farthest extremity, as it is said: "For Your servants have desired its stones and take its dust in grace," as our Sages* relate at the end of Tractate Kesubos*. With my respects and my blessing,
M. Schneerson,
