Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6929 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 428 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
By the grace of Hashem,
14 Tammuz* 5719,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself to
communal needs, and carries out a sacred mission,
Rav* Moshe (note 1: Rav* M. Munk),
I greet you and bless you,
After a long interruption, I have duly received your letter of 28 Iyar*, the delivery of which was delayed more than usual. I thank you very much for having taken the trouble to write to me about the results of your visit to various countries regarding the separation (note 2: Between boys and girls in school. See, on this subject, letter no. 6537). To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to comment on the argumentation of those who oppose this separation, on the basis of their rationality, in order to justify the facts or to satisfy their will. This idea, like all others, appears, moreover, in our Torah*, Torah* of life, including in the concretely applicable Halachah*. One thus finds two diametrically opposed teachings on this subject. Tractate Kiddushin* 82a says: "Yisrael is not suspected... (note 3: Of engaging in unnatural relations)." Yet Tractate Chullin* 11b states: "One does not appoint a guardian... (note 4: To prevent forbidden relations)." Likewise, it goes without saying that you must use all your strength to maintain this separation in the future as well. And although it still seems difficult to achieve, who knows? It is for a Jew to do what is in his power, and Hashem will do what seems good to Him.
I thank you in particular for having transmitted my greetings to the Chabad* schools you visited. It is surely unnecessary to ask you to make your contribution to strengthen and develop them. Indeed, your influence extends to many places and various administrations. We are the day after the day of the liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. You surely have knowledge of the account of his imprisonment and his self-sacrifice. May Hashem therefore grant that each one, within all of Yisrael, fulfill the mission entrusted to him by Divine Providence*, in the domain of Torah* and mitzvos* in general, and for education based on sacred values in particular. This question has always been fundamental, and how much more so in our era, rich in events, which moreover has caused multiple upheavals and confusion of minds and boundaries. With my respects and my blessing to give good tidings of both your communal accomplishments and your personal concerns,
