Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6927 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 426

By the grace of Hashem,

11 Tammuz* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself

to communal needs, Rav* Yehudah (note 1: Rav* Y. Shmotkin, of Tel Aviv. See, concerning him, letter no. 4594),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter and your request for a blessing from this Monday. At a propitious moment, I will mention your name at the resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. You inform me of your birthday and, on this occasion, you will surely observe the customs recently adopted by the Chassidim*. May Hashem grant that you have a year of success, material and spiritual at once. You will strengthen your study of the Torah* and your practice of the mitzvos*, in expansiveness. With my blessing that very soon you will be able to earn your livelihood amply,

A) You observe that the Derech HaChaim* on Tractate Avos*, chapter 5, Mishnah* 22, says regarding Avraham: "his two young men were with him (Imo)" (note 2: Accompanying him for the Akeidah* of Yitzchak), whereas for Bilaam (note 3: Regarding the young men who accompanied him), it uses the synonym Ito in place of Imo. And you note that the reverse is found in the Sefer Torah* and in the Chumash*. Perhaps this formulation follows the version of the Midrash Tanchuma*, at Parshas* Vayeira* and at the beginning of Parshas* Emor*, which is also that of Vayikra Rabbah*, chapter 26, paragraph 7. Our version of the Sefer Torah* and the Chumash* has been confirmed by the Minchas Shai* on the verse Balak* 22:22.

B) You ask me how to understand the Likkutei Torah* of the Arizal* on the verse Bamidbar* 16:14, regarding the Targum Yerushalmi*, according to which the verse: "Would you gouge out the eyes of these men?" must be interpreted in the interrogative sense, whereas this cannot be the case and could have been envisioned only if it were plausible. Nevertheless, certain commentators read it as an appeal, an announcement: "Would you go so far as to gouge?" This is the common ground found between the interpretation of Rashi* and that of the Likkutei Torah* of the Arizal*. This conforms to the first explanation of the Targumim*, who say no more and present only this formulation, as well as that of the Rashbam* and the Baal HaTurim*. As for Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra*, he cites both explanations at once.
