to communal needs, and possesses manifold knowledge,

Rav* Shlomo Yosef (note 1: Rav* Sh. Y. Zevin, of Yerushalayim, editor of the Talmudic Encyclopedia. See, concerning him, letters nos. 221 and 6967),

I am following up on the visit paid to me by Mr. Chaim Moshe Shapiro (note 2: One of the leaders of the National Religious Party, the Mizrachi*). Our discussion also touched upon you and I would like to share with you what we discussed. Mr. Moshe Chaim told me that for the upcoming elections, the Mizrachi* HaPoel HaMizrachi* is considering placing you on its list. I spoke to him about a united religious front, for, on my part, I still have hope that it will be formed, even if, according to rumors, the various parties are not enthusiastic about this idea. But I told him that even if this united front comes into being, I am not of the opinion that Rav* Zevin should appear on this list. Indeed, he exercises an influence upon varied and broad circles. His power is therefore much greater as a non-political man. Conversely, if he is inscribed on a list, this influence will be diminished. Thus, if Rav* Herzog Shlita* decides to rest and to resign from his functions (note 3: As Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel), I think that Rav* Zevin Shlita* will have his say in designating the candidate for his succession. This will not be the case if he appears on the list of a party or even on the united list of all the religious parties. In my view, this is much more important.

I am surprised and pained that the publication of the following volumes of the Talmudic Encyclopedia is so delayed. Moreover, I mentioned this fact in that same discussion, and I truly wonder whether your participation in the Knesset* is more important than an accomplishment as fundamental as the Talmudic Encyclopedia. Indeed, you devote your time to it and there is therefore no reason to diminish this accomplishment on account of your appearance and participation in the Knesset*, which others can do in your place.

You will surely tell me if there has been a follow-up to all this. Likewise, you will respond to me on the points raised above. With my respects, my blessing, in the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, to have "a healthy summer," and to give good tidings,

בהמשך לבקורו אצלי של מר חיים משה שי' שפירא, נתגלגלה השיחה גם בנוגע לכת"ר, ורצוני להודיע לכת"ר תוכן הדברים בזה.

מר משה חיים שי' אמר לי כי בקשר עם הבחירות הבע"ל יש סברה אצל

המזרחי - הפועל המזרחי להעמיד את כת"ר על רשימתם.

על זה עניתי לו - שאפילו אם תהי' חזית דתית מאוחדת (שכשאני לעצמי - עדיין לא נתייאשתי מתקוה זו, אע"פ שעל פי השמועה אין התלהבות בין המפלגות לרעיון זה), גם אז לא הי' נראה לי שהרב זוין שי' יופיע על הרשימה, כיון שהודות להשפעתו בהחוגים שונים ונרחבים - כוחו יפה יותר בתור אדם בלתי פוליטי, משא"כ אם יופיע על איזו רשימה תוקטן השפעתו. ולדוגמא, אילו הרב הרצוג שליט"א מחליט להנפש ולהתפנות ממשרתו, הרי לפי השערתי תהי' להרב זוין שליט"א השפעה בהשאלה מי יהי' המועמד לממלא מקום, משא"כ אם יהי' קשור ברשימה מפלגתית, אפילו מאוחדת מכל הרשימות הדתיות. ולדעתי ענין זה חשוב יותר...

לפלא וגם מצער, שמתעכבת כל כך הופעת הכרכים הבאים של האנציקלופדי' התלמודית. ודרך אגב, גם זה הזכרתי בשיחתי עם הנ"ל, שמסופקני במאד מאד אם השתתפות כת"ר בכנסת - חשובה יותר מאשר המפעל הכי חשוב דאנציקלופדי' התלמודית, שזמנו מוקדש למפעל זה ואין למעטו על ידי הופעתו והשתתפותו בכנסת, שהרי זה יכול להיעשות על ידי אחרים.

בודאי יודיעני כת"ר באם יהי' המשך בהאמור, וכן בכלל בנקודות האמורות לעיל.
