Volume 18 · Letter 413

By the grace of Hashem,

1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Tammuz* 5719,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Sivan*, in which you tell me that a match is being proposed to you. You replied that you wish to continue your study of our holy Torah* (note 1: After the marriage) and the other party has assured you that she accepts this condition. If it indeed proves to be so, if she accepts the idea of the continuation of your studies at the Yeshivah* for a considerable time, one must indeed take interest in this proposal. Hashem, Who grants His Providence* to each person, will guide you on the path that will be truly good for you. You tell me that the other party accepts the condition. Of course, you must first and foremost, for your part, make a firm decision not only to continue your study with drive and ardor, but moreover to intensify it. You should consult the Laws of Torah* Study of the Alter Rebbe*, at the beginning of chapter 3, which state: "After marriage, one may still study for two or three years without worry." Now, this statement is formulated regarding persons who exercise a professional activity (note 2: After marriage and sometimes even before). How much more so is this the case for those who have chosen an enviable lot — that of having the Torah* as their sole occupation and of adopting a sacred calling.

I have good hope that in addition to your study, with drive and ardor, of the revealed dimension of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, you also maintain the three well-known studies of Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. Indeed, one does not exclude the other (note 3: One study does not exclude the other). For what results here below from all this is the source of the distinction that can be made between the tallis* and the tzitzis*, as the Chassidic* discourses of this past Shabbos* explain (note 4: Delivered by the Rebbe). Nevertheless, the tallis* has no sanctity in itself, which is not the case for... (note 5: The studies of the Torah, which are all holy). With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,
