Volume 18 · Letter 213 · To: final

By the grace of Hashem*,

10 Adar Rishon* 5719,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me that some time ago you were seized by sadness. You explain this state of mind by the fact that, according to you, you do not know success in various domains. Now, you fear finding yourself in the same state and you therefore ask me what I think about it. You do not specify what your situation is regarding everything that concerns Judaism, the study of the Torah*, the practice of its Mitzvos*. I therefore presume that you fulfill all of this, in accordance with the expression of our Sages* according to which: "An emissary fulfills the mission entrusted to him." Now, every Jew is indeed the emissary of Hashem*, of the Creator of the world, Who directs it. And he is charged with living his life in this world in conformity with the teaching of our Torah*, eternal Torah* and Torah* of life.

Consequently, you must not only have knowledge of, but also recite the morning blessings, all of which begin with "Blessed are You" and which are therefore an expression of gratitude. Even before that, each person says: "I give thanks to You, for You have restored my soul to me." In other words, the restoration of the soul and the maintaining of man alive on this earth justify this man's expression of gratitude to his Creator, Who directs it. Nevertheless, for a reason known to Hashem*, man has been given free will. He can therefore lead his life in the appropriate manner, so that this life is worthy of its name, so that it is filled with a content of good and holiness. When free will is granted, it is certain that each person receives the strengths and the possibilities to put into concrete practice. And, practice proves that even if one has, on various occasions, carried out an action without success, it will not necessarily be the same in the future. The next time, which may even be the hundredth or the hundred and first, can bring success and even considerable success.

Of course, my aim is not only to present to you a profound worldview, as it is defined by the Torah*. My purpose is indeed to describe reality as it is, provided that man assumes what is incumbent upon him. And what is expected of him is what he is capable of doing. In the end, he will indeed succeed, for there is no man who is not fortunate, to use the expression you employ in your letter. The only distinction that must be made in this matter is between a lazy man and one who makes use of his capabilities, of the means that are abundantly granted to him by the Creator of the world. It is quite evident that one systematically needs the blessing of Hashem*. Consequently, every addition to the Torah* and the Mitzvos* multiplies these blessings in all the needs felt by man. You will surely contact the military chaplain who is responsible for your garrison, to offer him your help. And may Hashem* grant that you give me good news of all this. With my blessing,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
