Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6715 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 212 · To: final
By the grace of Hashem*,
7 Adar Rishon* 5719,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of Mr. David Ben-Gurion,
head of the government,
Greetings and blessings,
I sent you yesterday my official response (note 1: This refers to the preceding letter) to the question that was posed regarding the registration (note 2: Of the children of mixed couples, in accordance with the question: "Who is a Jew?" See the preceding letter). You will kindly excuse me for having delayed it until now, for various reasons. What follows is transmitted to you unofficially and is not even half-official. I hope therefore that you will forgive me for writing to you without diplomacy. Perhaps my formulation does not even conform to protocol. Furthermore, I will introduce my remarks with a few lines that may seem very simple. But in our world, nothing is simple; everything depends on the persons and the conditions. I therefore seize this opportunity to send you these few lines, in your capacity as the one responsible for this problem of registration, and more than that, as someone who plays a determining role in the context of life in our Holy Land, this question being but one of its aspects.
It is surely unnecessary to explain at length the troubled character, materially and spiritually, of the present period, especially in the existence of our people, the children of Israel, wherever they are. As has always been the case in the history of our people, the impact of spirituality on the material situation is far stronger than the reverse effect. I am not unaware that this idea departs from the doctrine of materialism, but that has little bearing on what follows. Of course, in such a period, the responsibility incumbent upon each person is greatly increased, much greater than in past years. How much more so is this the case for those persons who exercise a broad influence in various domains of the life of our people. This influence is perhaps even far more determining than these persons themselves imagine. As is systematically the case, the responsibility is commensurate with the merit. The greater the former, the greater the latter as well. He who has a responsibility and assumes it, which is not given to all, therefore acquires a great communal merit. Nevertheless, even when one possesses this merit, not every moment is propitious for assuming one's mission and one's responsibility.
I am indeed alluding here to your own responsibility. For, whatever the official way of characterizing the present situation, it is indeed your decision that prevails, in concrete terms, in the Holy Land at the present time, in the most fundamental domains of public life, some of them even having a spiritual bearing. I am not raising here the question of whether the regime is democratic or not. My aim is not to polemicize. As I have said, my letter is unofficial and it refers to concrete action. Now, from what I observe, it is indeed you who exercise the strongest influence in the situation of our country, even if you sometimes act directly and, at other times, indirectly.
In past years, it was customary to say, in certain circles, that Jews living outside the Holy Land must have recourse to the Jewish faith and to everything connected with it in order to protect themselves from assimilation. Those who protected themselves in another way, especially those who settled in Eretz Yisrael* with their own organization, considered that the environment, the language, the structure were quite sufficient, that they could do without the Jewish faith, or, according to a more incisive formulation, that they would not impose upon themselves such a "burden" in their lives, a daily burden, conditioning the most important achievement as well as the most banal act. Nevertheless, the advancement and development of the situation in Eretz Yisrael* during the last seven or eight years clearly establish that religion, as necessary as it may have been previously for the Jews of other countries, is infinitely more fundamental for those who reside in the Holy Land. One of the essential reasons for this observation is the following. Eretz Yisrael* is exposed to a danger: the second generation could forge for itself a new personality, which would bear the name of Israel but would be totally foreign to the past of our people, to its eternal and immutable values, which would even be opposed to it in its worldview, in its culture, in the content of its daily existence, and which would manifest its opposition while expressing itself in Hebrew, residing in the land of the Patriarchs, and being capable of growing enthusiastic about the Bible.
I do not at all wish to develop this painful idea, for very obvious reasons, all the more so since I do not see the utility. One of the reasons for which I want to believe that the misfortune will not manifest itself a second time is the following. In the end, some, belonging to this generation, will warn, in a loud voice, against this danger. And this call will be heard and will have its effect, so that one will protect oneself from the misfortune while there is still time. In recent years, one feels a great upheaval, in the diaspora as well as in Eretz Yisrael*, demanding, requiring that spiritual content be given to life. And, if one analyzes this situation deeply, one can perceive that this thirst transcends the intellect of man.
It is clear that one will not quench this thirst of the youth of our eternal people with the explanations and conceptions brought to them by contemporary personalities, whose fate will be the same as that of the ideas introduced yesterday, which have disappeared from among the living. It is here that the faith of Moshe* and of Israel intervenes, the Written Law and the Oral Law, our immutable values since the day when the people of Israel stood before Hashem* our Elokim*, at Chorev* (note 3: Mount Sinai), where it heard a great voice, without echo, proclaiming: "I am Hashem* your Elokim*... You shall have no other gods..." — an Injunction and a teaching, but which can also be interpreted as an assurance given.
Of course, I am not referring here to religious theory only as a profound worldview or as a lecture topic to be addressed during the festivals. I am alluding to an effective and concrete way of life, adopted also during the week, including in domains that all call profane. In fact, our religion privileges concrete action. Now, the present period is propitious, as has never been the case before, to incline and orient the context of life in our Holy Land, down to the smallest detail, in the direction that has just been defined. In this case, this propitious moment is now knocking at your door. You have the possibility and the merit to make use of it in the most effective way. And this opportunity is not granted to all. The equivalent of this has not been found for many decades.
These few lines will surely arouse your surprise. Do I truly think, through my letter, to modify and influence a worldview that you have adopted for several decades, all the more so since, moreover, you have been able to observe the fruit of your efforts (note 4: The effectiveness of such a conception)? Nevertheless, in my view, the situation in Eretz Yisrael* corresponds well to what I have described. Certainly, you have surely had to reflect yourself, on several occasions, on such a situation, on the intangible truth that lies in this idea. Despite this, I thought that I did not have the right to keep silent about my remarks, while writing to you about the registration, which is one element of this entire context. I told myself that it was my duty to emphasize all of this to you, at least within the framework of a letter addressed to you personally.
On this occasion, and asking you to excuse me for my delay, I thank you for having sent me, in its time, the brochure that you published. Indeed, I rely, for what is said in this present letter, on what this brochure reports, mentioning Eretz Yisrael*, that is to say the expression: "Holy Land." Now, the adjective "holy," just like the name "Jewish," have meanings that have been sanctified by many generations of our people, since the Giving of the Torah*. It is at this event that we were called "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." Then, the people of Israel received "the Holy Land, in all its borders," "the land of the Canaanite, the Lebanon, until the great river, the Euphrates." And so it remains to this day. With my respects and my blessing,
Menachem Mendel Schneerson,
