Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6711 — Tzedakah
Volume 18 · Letter 208
By the grace of Hashem*,
4 Adar Rishon* 5719,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 20 Shevat*, in which you briefly describe your life. You conclude it by posing the following questions:
A) How to rid oneself of laziness? You will meditate on what the holy Tanya* says at the beginning of chapter 41, from page 56a to page 56b, up to the expression "the King." Better still, you will learn this text by heart. You will review it, in the text, from time to time, orally or at least in thought. If all of this is engraved in your brain and in your heart, it is certain that you will strengthen your zeal.
B) How to prevail over your evil inclination, which is great and strong? Our Sages* teach that "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with injustice toward His creatures." The result is therefore proportional to the effort and, in every situation that a man confronts, the forces and the means are granted to him to be the victor. For all that, it is necessary to reflect, so as not to become discouraged when the evil inclination attacks you repeatedly. This reflection is described in several passages of the holy Tanya*, and you will consult its index, which appears in the edition published by Kehot*. You will study it, in particular, from chapter 27.
In general, it is good to follow firmly the royal path — that of the King of the world, the Holy One, blessed be He, Who gives the Torah* and commands the Mitzvos*. For this, one must show zeal, a quality that derives from joy, from openness of heart, and from purity, as explained in particular in chapter 26 of the Tanya*. You have received the injunction, and it is therefore certain that you have the means. I hope that you are aware of the three fixed studies that bear on the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. You will endeavor to adopt them in the future, of course without making a vow. With my blessing to convey good news,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
the secretary,
