By the grace of Hashem*,

4 Adar Rishon* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To Mr. Yaakov (note 1: Y. Zeckbach, of Jerusalem),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the second day of Rosh Chodesh* Adar Rishon*, in which you express your astonishment at what is explained in the Sefer Baal Shem Tov*, at Parshas* Behaaloscha*, in the name of the Baal Shem Tov*, regarding the crossing of the Red Sea, which is presented there as a natural event. The miracle resides in the fact that the Holy One, blessed be He, at the beginning of creation, established, among the natural phenomena, that on a certain day, the sea would split. This contradicts the explanation found in various texts, according to which the splitting of the Red Sea is indeed a miracle and is even among the greatest. The work you mention is a compilation of several books. One may therefore wonder to what extent the commentaries it reports are precise. Indeed, in such a case, an imprecision on a single word can change the meaning of a passage from one extreme to the other. Moreover, you know that the Baal Shem Tov* commented on the Torah* in another language (note 2: In Yiddish) and not in the Holy Tongue. Now, the translator did not always correctly understand the meaning of what the Baal Shem Tov* was explaining, including when he lived in the same era and the same place. You will find an example of this in Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, at chapter 25, page 141a. It is therefore practically certain that this is indeed the case here (note 3: That there was indeed a misinterpretation). Indeed, you are right to say that the splitting of the Red Sea is one of the greatest miracles. In this regard, you will also consult the Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah* of the Alter Rebbe*, at chapter 2.

On the question itself, even if someone had indeed stated such an interpretation regarding the crossing of the Red Sea in the name of the Baal Shem Tov*, it may have been given according to the conception of another, to follow his reasoning, even though he himself does not adopt it. Thus, it is as if he were saying: "Even if one admits that the splitting of the Red Sea is a natural phenomenon, despite this..." One should know that many of the great ones and thinkers of Israel of past generations explained in this manner the rainbow, which is defined as a "sign of the covenant," even though it is also a natural manifestation. You will consult the Torah* commentaries on this subject, at Parshas* Noach*. One can also explain this formulation according to the commentary of Rabbeinu Bechayei*, on the verse Beshalach* 14:27, which says: "This was placed in the nature of the water" (note 4: Which was naturally to split at that precise moment). You will consult this text.

On this occasion, I would like to remind you of the necessity of setting aside a fixed time for the study of the inner dimension of the Torah*, which in our era has been revealed through Chassidus*. For if at all times and in all places this has been an obligation, how much more so is this the case in our era and in this period, especially in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. With my blessing to convey good news,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
