Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6704 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 201

By the grace of Hashem*,

1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Adar Rishon*

5719, Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 17 Shevat*, in which you tell me that you wish, in the future, to adopt the liturgical rite of the Arizal*, that of the Alter Rebbe*, which the Chassidim* of Chabad* use. This is particularly good and judicious. Moreover, the stories of the Chassidim* (note 1: See, on this subject, Letters no. 6332, 6721, and 7012) relate that the Alter Rebbe* established its text based on seventy Siddurim*. As various texts establish, one may pass from the Ashkenaz* rite to the Sefard* rite and from the latter to the Arizal* rite, but not the reverse. If you adopt the Arizal* rite, you must therefore make the decision to do so once and for all.

You ask me whether a Chassid* of Chabad* leading the service in a synagogue where the paragraph Veshamru* is recited (note 2: In the Friday evening prayer, which is omitted according to the Chabad* custom. See, on this subject, Letter no. 6371) must recite it as well. It seems to me that he should not, since one has accepted the halachic* ruling of the Alter Rebbe*, according to which this recitation could constitute an interruption (note 3: Between the blessings of the Shema* and the Amidah*). Moreover, those who pray in this synagogue know that, in concrete terms, it is not recited, even if the others do so (note 4: They would therefore not understand why this prayer leader would do so). You will consult, in this regard, Orach Chaim*, at chapter 236, which reports the ruling of the Tzemach Tzedek*. It is therefore appropriate not to recite it, even if you lead the service.

At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, so that each may obtain the satisfaction of his needs. It is you who transmit their request to me, and it is therefore quite evident that you must strengthen your commitment to the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. This will multiply the blessings of Hashem* and will enable you to obtain the fulfillment of the wish of your heart (note 5: Perhaps that of having a child). With my blessing to convey good news,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
